What is your motivation to buy Skyrim ?
Hello all
This may seem like an odd question to some but what is your motivation to buy Skyrim.
Are you
1) A massive lore fan and want to the next chapter.
2) Just like RPGs and Skyrim should be a good one.
3) Want an open world and TES supplies that.
What is your poison... what makes you want to buy Skyrim in the first place ?
For me its to mod it, if it was not moddable, I probably would not be that interested in it.

I don't usually play games. There is just a few of them I have ever played more, and Oblivion is one of them. As a some sort of wannabe-engineer, I got fascinated by the game engine, that is, all that trial-and-error work of custom enchants and spells. I'm waiting to have some sort of similar experience from Skyrim.

RPGs without an open world are quite far removed from the old pen and paper games, where you can play the role of your character by choosing to do any action you like.giskard wrote:Hello all

Videogames will probably never come close to the infinite degree of choice in PnP games, but Bethesda's open world RPGs come the closest by having hundreds of quests, hundreds of locations you can discover, lots of layers of activities you can carry out and various organizations you can join, etc.
I can't even imagine what Skyrim would be like without an open world, but it certainly wouldn't feel like the TES and Bethesda RPGs we know and love.

Re: What is your motivation to buy Skyrim ?
I've played Morrowind for like ten million hours, give or take, and I honestly think it's the best game ever made.
I was somewhat disappointed with Oblivion. It was epic the first week or so, but it doesn't have the same replay-value as TES III. I would buy Skyrim even if I had hated everything I've seen about it so far, which is not the case. The feeling I get from it is that it will be as magical as Morrowind. That's why I'll buy it.

I guess mostly option #1 and #3. I just think TES is a great series so logically I'd want to see where the developers take it.

#1, mostly. The game itself will probably be great as well, but I'm in it for the series development.

2 and 3 for me. Bethesda IMO is just one of the few game companies that make their games with blood, sweat and tears.
Bioware games on the other hand, seem full of potential but the devs get lazy and dont work as hard as Bethy. It shows
Skyrim will live and die with Radiant Story,IMO. I just gotta see how it works out!

mostly 1
the open world aspect is why I got into the ES series in general
so now I keep coming back to see how the story continues, and how they'll top themselves next

Re: What is your motivation to buy Skyrim ?
Honestly it was because i love the tes series, the lore, the open world, but ny main reason is i wanted a revamped oblivion and after 3yrs no matter what i would get the next tes. Sadly as of lately i lost complete interest in all games idk why, probably because i started school again. The only thing on my mind as of now is moving out and getting a place of my own, also getting married which i dont think needs to be on my mind being a junior in highschool. But if anyone hassuggestions on how to get into video games again, it would be nice to hear what i could do.

All 3 of them. Basically, I love RPGs and I think Bethesda have nailed a pretty good formula. It still needs perfection but every experiment (or game if you will) they make has had it's attractions. I'm confident that Skyrim will be no different.

Re: What is your motivation to buy Skyrim ?
i'm a rp fan and TES is the only game series bar none that ticks all the boxes for me
the making of the character and pitting it against a challenging world is everything
finding a place that's tough to get in to, retreating with a bloody nose, re thinking the strategy, going out and re equipping and then returning, and see if i succeed this time. I really like hitting over my weight in these games, limping out with 1 hp left and as much gold as i can carry

i can't wait for this game

A nice variety of answers there, which is pretty healthy and shows the game has not become [&@%!] or stale.
I think the variety of players playing the game has a lot to do with a games succeed, word gets out to a much wider audience this way.

Re: What is your motivation to buy Skyrim ?
Pretty much all 3. Even if i wasn't a lore fanatic, and I'd never heard of the elder scrolls before finding out about skyrim, I would still be getting it.

Re: What is your motivation to buy Skyrim ?
Beth is my favourite company, and todd is my favorite vg director, so... Yeah.
The elder scrolls is now my favorite series.
I mean, it is telling.
Skyrim's main quest alone is ten hours longer than all of mass effect 1, yes that is factually accurate. I just played through me1 recently, it took me 19 hours to do EVERYTHING.
i'm buying skyrim because this series is the best, this director is the best, this company is the best.
i'm a nerd.

Re: What is your motivation to buy Skyrim ?
Good point, the old days most main quests where at least 30 hours long, games with shorter quest lines came alone after 2000 mostly. Todd is an old school player, he clearly remembers those longer games and still makes them. I actually rate a games value for money on a £1 per hour rating.xopsi wrote:

If a game costs £30, then I expect 30 hours game play out of it, if I get it, I consider it money well spent, if I dont, I think the game was over priced and I say so. I have no idea how much that would be in dolars but divide the cost by 30 to get the dolar value per hour.
I think working out the actual value of a game to you based on hours played vs cost puts things in to perspective because if you only paid £2 for a game and get 3 hours out of it, thats still good even if the game is crap.

Re: What is your motivation to buy Skyrim ?
well for me its a mix of 2 and 3 with a little bit of my own reason too. oblivion was the first rpg game that i ever played and, to put it quite simply, it took my breath away. playing that game for the first time was an experience i will never, ever forget. so when i heard that the folks who gave me that first experience were gunna make the next game in the series, there was no "will i get skyrim?", rather it was "i must get this game."

Re: What is your motivation to buy Skyrim ?
I think anything over 30 hours is good value for money and yes I agree, most beth games are at bin of 200 hours of game play usually. So they are very good value for money. I think that is part of their appeal. If you mod them too, you can easily double that or treble it.Lindai wrote:To be entertained for 250+ hours.

Re: What is your motivation to buy Skyrim ?
Option 3 and 1.
I love a good open-world RPG that has a great history. While I do love a lot of lore, all I really need from a game is a real solid plot and some nice sidestories. I don't care too much about various folklore within the game and all the grimy little details you can read in the 200+ books. I mean, I'd rather listen to people talk about it within the game, and feel like you are part of that history. Fx I loved how FO3 and FO:NV mentioned your progress in the radio, and some other local lore. It makes me feel more drawn into the game - the 'here and now', you know.
