I have a 3 characters going on now (I put my old ones on a memory card, too many saves can get confusing). Ones a uber mage, pwns all (jk), a stealth mage, and a vamp theif refuge (backstory later). The vamp is my favorite. I'm playing on the hardest difficulty setting to keep things realistic and hard. No cheats or glitches and no doing the main quest. I roleplay to start out as an old beggar in bravil, and get bit by a vamp in the night. I have to make my way up the ranks of soicty until I can get a cure. Its really challanging, I have to use poisens and arrows alot. Also, I only am allowed to carry three weapons at once. One primary (warharmer, longsword, ect), one secondary (shortsword, dagger), and one special (A bow+arrows, or a devasting scroll). Tell me what you think. Like I said, I'm writing a dairy-type backstory on him. Might be done in a day or two). :D

After you've beaten the game a dozen times, the only way to keep it interesting is to role-play ;)

I even pretend I'm not an immortal hero, I try to avoid every attack (even arrows and spells) and when I get hit (by an arrow, for example) I use a healing spell or potion. When I encouter some bandits, I plan my attack, count the number of enemies, sneak closer and try to take them all out one for one.

men i tried doing that in hard difficulty to keep it realistic, but then i didnt really make it cause whenver i got attacked by bandits and wolves, minotaurs and all those guys, i just got killed, i even tried just wearing normal clothing and a shortsword or dagger.

Lower the difficulty, then ;)
One shot one kill role-playing works perfect with the difficulty at lowest but any higher than 50% becomes nearly impossible.

Very First Mage Character so I'm thinking I did ok...offer any advice if you have suggestions on a better character

BTW I used the technique of one skill from each attribute(with the exception of Agility)

Name: Pierce
Class: Wizard(Custom)
Race: Breton
Sign: Apprentice
ATTs: Intel and Will
Major Skills: Destruction, Conjuration, Restoration, Illusion, Blade, Armorer, Atheltics

Level 2 at the moment

Dont remember all my skills and attributes levels

As this is my first mage its quite fun, more so than i thought. I have a touch lightning spell, came with my character, that really helps, along with an absorb health spell(again came with the character). I have an iron dagger as back up but have not used it. I am in the mages guild, done the reccomendations for Cheydinhal, Bravil and Leyawin. I am rather poor, as I saved up and bought a horse from Bravil. However, I can usually pop out some money from alchemy.

I attempt to roleplay to the extent that I am not fast travelling. I think once I get more powerful I will fast travel but justify it by saying I can teleport...tho only to major cities or somewhere where I am alot.

At the moment I am wearing the blue mages robe, although I would like the grey robe, so after looking at the wiki, i am going to gnoll mountain.

Hopefully soon, I will get a soul trap spell so that when I get to the University I can start improving my gear.

Again any suggestions about mage characters would be appreciated. Also any comments on my character are welcome.

Name: Renault Selone
Race: Breton
Class: Custom Assassin
Sign: Mage

Favored Skills: Acrobatics, Alchemy, Alteration ,Conjuration, Destruction, Illusion, and Sneak.

Renault is an Assassin to many, though he claims to be more than one. Granted he hides it very well during the day, giving lessons in Desrtuction and Illusion magical schools during the day at the arcane university or at the various guild halls accross Cyrodiil.

Normally he can be found with three daggers and long sword. He never wears armer saying, "The night will watch over me better than any armer." It probably works for him, not a scratch that anyone has seen. for some reason he favors summoning either a personal Dremora or Lich. They usually distract something long enough for the poisons to take effect.

pretty good, but unless you like bretons in particular, the breton with the apprentice is a bad choice

Most base magicka is the Atronach + Altmer (+250, stunted magicka). The downside of the Atronach is however rather significant, so some might not consider it the best path and thus exclude it from consideration when determining how to get high magicka (I know I do). If we do exclude the Atronach, we have the following: The highest base magicka is of course the Apprentice + Altmer (+200, 100% weakness to magic and 25% weakness to the elements), but the weakness is rather painful. Next there are two combinations that work. The Apprentice + Breton (+150, 50% weakness to magic), or the Mage + Altmer (+150, 25% weakness to the elements). That's why he said Breton + Apprentice isn't the greatest combination. As you net the same amount of magicka for a smaller downside by having an Altmer + Mage.

ah, understood, i knew that there was some reason why i did not use an altmer, but i did not feel like doing all the math. I guess in my opinion its the best mage character choice by reason of the least serious downfalls, altho i suppose for a good mage, the weaknesses could be avoided.

As an addendum to my character's mini bio, I have never spent so much time training my skills. I have found that I spend a good amount of time at the University conjuring skeletons and soultrapping them, allowing me to train Conjuration, Destruction, Mysticism, and Restoration. When I get tired of that, I am working on getting gold so I will be able to start enchanting items, something I have actually never done in Oblivion, tho I have always wanted to. I am planning on making some basic forify magicka and willpower items to start, and to gain practice. Later I will probably enchant a weapon or two ( I still have yet to use a weapon :D ) I also want to make some custom spells, especially destructive ones as I know that if I don't the game will get much harder rather soon haha.

the breton apprentice is a poor choice because of the following:
breton + apprentice = +150 magicka, 50% weakness to magic
atlmer + mage = +150 magicka, only 25% weakness to only elemental magic

Here is the backstory, copied from the "Post your character's adventures" thread. If you want the adventures, check out that thread, although I have none yet, I just started!

An Architect is an experienced tactitioner, who creates masterful battle plans on the spot. Typically highly civilized people, they have great people skills, to persuade others to fight for them. In battle, they support their crew with Alteration, Restoration, and even Conjuration magic. They prefer the tactical advantage of the bow, and are OCD about keeping their equipment in top shape, surpassing even Dwemer smiths. They prefer heavy armour, although they are so used to it, it feels like a second skin to them. They trust shortswords, believing that quick, manouverable attacks are the way to go, although they can adapt to using a Longsword if required. They steadfastly believe that shields are a very essential part of combat. Their clever wit, and fine skill enable them to survive battle after battle. - taken from UESP.yeahrite.com

Flick is a Breton, who grew up in the heart of Skyrim. Her heritage is actually part elf/part nord, which explains her strength in combat. She cherishes her bow, and is the best Archer in all of Tamriel. She also has the combat skills to match, standing up to her many Nordic neighbours. She has short, military style hair. She worked her way up the ranks in the Skyrim army, and became the founder of the "Jackdaws" regiment, a secret, black-ops group that performed Assassinations all throughout Skyrim, to withhold the peace. When a mission with the general army went haywire, although she completed the Assassination, against an important imperial politician, it turned out that she'd been set-up, and was arrested. Because of overcrowding in the Skyrim jails, and they security of the Imperial prison, she was moved. It was here Uriel Septim came on the day of his death, and she was freed.

I guess I'll post too. After an OS upgrade wiped my hard drive my only character is the newest in a long line of either Breton (easy mode) or Altmer (normal mode) mages with the apprentice birthsign that I've had. (I can't bring myself to select anything other sign for my mages, why I don't know)

Sign: The Apprentice

Class: Mage
Attributes:

Personality 40
Luck 51
Skills:

Name: Eric Snowmane
Race: Nord
Gender: Male
Birthsign: Mage
Class: Skyrim King
Specializations: Combat
F. Attributes: Intelligence/Strength
Major Skills: Blunt, Block, Heavy Armour, Conjuration, Destruction, Restoration, Athletics

Gameplay: Only uses axes and white armour (crusader's/steel). Only uses frost spells and summons frost atronach.

Name: Nashti
Race: Dunmer
Gender: Female
Birthsign: Mage
Class: Night Queen
Specialization: Stealth
F. Attributes: Willpower/Agility
Major Skills: Blade, Marksman, Destruction, Light Armour, Restoration, Conjuration, Mysticism.

Gameplay: Bow to start the conflict-destruction for oncoming enemies-blade to carve the survivors. Nashti is my vampire character ^^ I love her so much. Conjuration is for summoning undead and mysticism for detect life. She never travels during the day, before sunrise she goes dungeon looting then open field hunting at night.

Name: Nelacar
Race: Altmer
Gender: Male
Birthsign: Apprentice
Class: Arcanist
Specialization: Magic
F. Attributes: Intelligence/Willpower
Major Skills: Destruction, Restoration, Conjuration, Alteration, Mysticism, Illusion, Blade

Gameplay: An Altmer Apprentice? I must be crazy right?... partially but no, he is actually very easy as his clothes are enchanted with fire/frost/shock shield enchanments, enough to boost his defence high and enough to have a fair resistance to the elements without being over powered.

I would say it would be more fun to play as than a Breton Mage. Breton Mage is what I use generally though (for battlemages/jackofalltrades type characters.

I was thinking the other day, about a very powerful character:

High Elf (either gender)
The Atronach
Class: Daedricwarrior
Specialization: Combat
Attributes: Strength, Endurance
Major Skills: Blade, (or blunt) Block, Heavy Armour, Destruction, Conjuration, Restoration, Alteration

Gameplay: Here is where it is interesting. ONLY uses bound armor and weapons until master heavy armor (so they are weightless) for enchantments. At first, Alteration is primarily for feather and shield spells to get 85% resistance at a very low level. Summons creatures with Conjuration too. Using enchantments on clothing and later armor, gets 100% spell absorption, and everything else goes to fortify magicka. Uses a weapon with "Absorb magicka 20pts 2secs on strike" and "Soul trap 2secs on strike". Absorb health as well if there are enough charges.

This would be very powerful. 100% absorb magicka, highest possible magicka pool, powerful melee fighter, etc. Would get 5 levels of training for Armorer every level until expert, so later you don't have to catch it up when you start using normal armor.
As a result of bound armor and weapons, Conjuration would max very early, giving you early access to master Summon ??? spells.
I play LBP! PSN: dkjestrup, play my Sonnet of the Gargoyle level!
