Skywind Adding New Creatures to Morrowind

Post by OblivionDuruza »

The TES Renewal Project Skywind has revealed that they will not be staying completely faithful to vanilla Morrowind in their implementation of the game in the Skyrim engine. They claim that they will remain friendly to the lore, annoncing one change as being the inclusion of the Land Dreugh and Molecrab (images), two creatures that appear in the TES lore.

Any thoughts on the decision, or on the two creatures and their implementation? Is anyone keen for Skywind, and will the addition of new elements to Morrowind encourage anyone who was planning on simpy sticking with Morrowind to check it out?

While we're on the subject, the project has launched a new official YouTube channel. It's still a little barebones, but contains a number of environment flyovers for anyone interested in seeing how things are progressing.

Well, Morrowind is about 4 square miles in size to represent an island orders of magnitude larger - I would say there is room for Land Dreugh and molecrabs simply from differences in scaling.

I think Morrowind's map is closer to 9-10 sq miles.

Morrowind is about 9.3 sq miles. This thread is well worth a ganderon the subject.

Personally, I'm inclined to agree with you CBR. I wasn't looking forward to Skywind particularly much, but now that they've indicated that they might be able to create something new from the project, I'm much more interested. If they're able to demonstrate that they've added new content that fits organically into the Morrowind world and the Skyrim engine, I'll probably have a good look. It's going to take more than a couple of new creatures to do that, however.

Kind of deviates away from the project's goal, doesn't it?

Well, would Bethesda have put these in Morrowind originally if Morrowind was made for today's far superior computers? I'm inclined to think yes.

Well, the point was stuff got cut because of scaling issues, Ill take the numeric correction.

I would say that is certainly the case if their goals remain to reproduce Morrowind in an updated engine, but it seems to me that they really want to become something of their own with the project (and possibly have plans beyond Skywind). I do think the project as simply Morroblivion 2.0 is a little less interesting than something like Tamriel Rebuilt or Return to Morrowind, even if it is far more achievable. My guess, from what I've been seing of them, is that TES Renewal will do a 4th Era Morrowind after Skywind.

Without going too far into something that really does warrant its own thread, it actually reminds me of the new direction Tamriel Rebuilt announced it was to take (which I was very surprised to not see being discussed here actually).

I was actually very disappointed with that announcement personally. :S

I have to admit I've been pretty stoked about Skywind since I heard about the project. I may fall into a pretty odd camp which considers Morrowind to be the strongest of the TES games but I'm hesitant to play the original game because I'm not sure if ten years later I would have the patience to revisit some of the more taxing game mechanics. Sure some things will get lost in the conversion but the idea of playing a version of Morrowind that's a little more bent towards casual play seems pretty attractive to me.

I have mixed feelings about the new creatures mentioned in this thread. On the one hand if they are willing to put the work to add lore friendly content it's a great thing for immersion. On the other I recall reading thread I think back in February or March where it was projected that meshes would be complete in a year and a half by generous estimates and could easily take as long as three years. I may not be putting enough faith in the project but it's things like this or the ambition to make Skywind fully voiced that make me wonder if the people working on it have enough ability to prioritize to ever get this to the point where the overwhelming majority of the quests are playable.

That's a good point p-sto. It seems like they've been moving pretty quickly, but from my observations of Tamriel Rebuilt, doing external environments is often the quickest part.

I as too, you're not alone. Hopefully they don't go too stir crazy with it, the final release will still probably be fantastic.
