Ok, I already have Umbra. I go to talk to the shrine and the journal entry pops up, cutting the shrine's speech off; "I have retrieved the sword.." and afterwards, the game semi freezes. I can look around, swap to third person, etc. but I can't open my menu or move, or target the shrine or other NPCs or anything. What can I do to fix this?

Try console command "enableplayercontrols" if you're on the PC. Your profile indicates that you are playing on the PS3. If this is the case I don't know how to help you... sorry.

I'm not sure what the reward is for returning the Umbra but the Umbra is much better to keep so just never return to the shrine. Thats one workaround that wont affect the rest of the game.

If you want a deadric artifact for the main quest the wabbajack is a popular one to give up.

You get the masque of clavicus vile, which fortifies your personality by either 20 or 30. But if you officially turn clavicus down you get to keep umbra, though it is no longer a weight free quest item, but you do complete the quest. I've always given up molag's mace.

I'd rather have the mask. Not a fan of Umbra, Soul Trap enchantments annoy me, but if I need one, I have a custom sword for that.

I know there are better ways of using the soul trap but what is beneficial use of increasing personality when a scroll can do the same job for the purposes it serves. Buying a house or information etc..

Because I'd rather get all Daedric artifacts, then onlt give up the one/s that don't provide any use, entertainment or lulz.

You are right the whole avoid returning to the shrine and let the quest stay in the journal for ever more was not a viable solution. I've heard of a bug on unpatched games where returning to the shrine crashes the game no matter what you choose to do when start conversation with the shrine. I've never got all artifacts which is something I'm going to do. Sangine Rose provides hours of fun!

You can get around the bug (without the patch) simply by obtaining the sword before ever speaking to the shrine. If you happen to walk up to ol' stony boy for the first time with the sword already in possession, you can complete the quest (be it by surrendering or keeping the sword) without fear of crashing the game.

The real trick is, by doing it this manner, you have to "murder" Umbra.

Whether by keeping the sword or trading it for the mask, you have to finish the quest if you ever hope to obtain the Oghma Infinium.

Is that the reward for completing the final shrine quest?

That is the reward you get when you find Daedric Shrine #16 of 16.

It can only be started when the 15 other shrine quests are completed. I've never got that far.

Dark Spark Fun Fact: the messenger who tells you where to find Hermaeus Mora's shrine will not leave his spot until you talk to the Daedric Prince. Which means, if he consulted you in the safety of your own home, he will stay there for the longest time if you dally.

I have not discovered what kind of sound he'll make if you chop into his back with a War Axe and attempt to pull his lungs out through the wounds. Yet.

I would venture the sound is one of unhappiness and discomfort.

I'm of a mind that'll sound like the disembodied voice of a talking dog trying to dissuade you from completing a compact with a Daedric Lord.

There are plenty of artefacts to give to Martin, at least 2 maces, if you're more of a blade user.
So don't feel pressed to give up one you like, search for more shrines.

It's just that, I only view Umbra as a quest item. Also, being the sentimental person I am, I pretty much ALWAYS use my own sword. I can't remember ever equipping Umbra for anything other than to see how it looked. Which wasn't all that impressive, BTW.
