I just noticed (been playing off an on for a few years) and I realized now why 'Arena Waistworks' has always bothered me, because shouldn't it be "waste-works" instead of waist? Or is it just a odd word/spelling choice that appeals to the charm of Morrowind?

Generally, the waistworks in the canton has nothing to do with the sewers or tombs below and everything to do with it being located in the mid-section of each canton

Why are they called waistworks, then?

Picture a four story building. The canalworks would be the basement, the waist works would be the ground floor or more, then the plaza, with the top floors reserved for the upper crust - the head, if you will.

Just in case this is some translation misunderstanding, a person's waist can also be called their midsection

Oh, ok - something I didn't know about the description of the human body
