So OK, I can figure out how to mix "Ingredients" but how do you include "Food" items?

For example I have a recipe for a Resist Frost Potion which asks for Gourd and Fire Salts.

How do I include the Gourd at the the Alchemy Table?

Is it something to do with levelling and perks in the actual skill of Alchemy or what?

I think that recipe must be from an early design of Skyrim or something.

Gourd cannot be used in Alchemy without mods and Fire Salts don't have a 'Resist Frost' effect.

So just ignore it.

Do I take it then that you can't use anything categorised as a Food in Alchemy?

I believe that is the case.

afaik Food is just for cooking in those campfire / cooking pot things or for baking in the oven in a Hearthfire house.

There are a few 'Alchemy Ingredients' that are also used in Food preparation (Salt, Moon Sugar, Garlic, Lavender etc) but as a general rule if something doesn't have an Alchemy Effect list attached to it then it can't be used in Alchemy. I can't think of any exceptions to that atm.
