Fort Dawnguard is still down there in the bottom right hand corner of my map still greyed out having not yet been visited.

I've tried trekking to it but keep getting told that I can't proceed any further that the gate posts on the road out that appears to lead in that particular direction.

So what do I need do to start exploring this part of the game?

Dawnstar is a town on the North coast of Skyrim that is easily accessed.

Are you referring to something else?

Easy to mix up the two! :)

Are you below level 10? If so, you'll need to wait till you reach L10 and then someone will approach you and initiate the quest to go to the Fort.

No I'm level 60!

I may or may not have had a trigger, I just didn't notice it and if I did have one I can't recall it.

Come to think of it, the icon for Fort Dawnguard, even though it is greyed, wouldn't even appear if there hadn't been some sort of prompt. I just want think what it was and don't understand how to get back to it.

Should it appear in my list of quests to do list? If so what will it be listed as?

You should have an entry in your miscellaneous quests that says: Find out about the Dawnguard

You want a 'cave entrance' - head east from Riften along the road and it's on the left just past a path leading up to Black-Briar Lodge.

Sounds like you've gone past it - you're heading towards Morrowind.

Found it!

It leads into Dayspring Canyon and then on to the impressive fort which is like the opposite of Doctor Who's Tardis, (ie large on the outside and small on the inside!).

The entrance off the easterly path is very easy to miss!
