When a weapon runs out of enchantment, how do you recharge it?

I realise that soul gems are needed and I know how to fill them, but how then do you apply them to the weapon?

Go to the weapon that you want to charge in the weapons menu, then press the relevant button that is displayed at the bottom of the screen for the 'Charge' option.
This should then display all your filled soul gems that you can choose from to recharge your weapon.

It's the opposite of Oblivion, where you activate the Soul Gem and then choose which weapon to recharge.

In Skyrim, you activate the weapon, and then get to choose which Soul Gem to use up.

I had same problem at first (i came from Morrowind with bit of Oblivion) but then i read in this forum that it goes opposite way than Morrowind (in Morrowind first use soulgem then select what to do with it but in Skyrim its other way around)

I've figured it out now - it's easier than Oblivion!

I'm trying to obtain the Star of Azura the hard way so I don't gave to carry so many soul gems and so I can increase my loot hauls.

It's quite difficult the protagonist is a tough mage and he's a hell of a quick! I'm at level 40 and still finding it hard with a bow and arrow.

Any tips?

Here's a couple:
Hidden:
The fight inside the star may be quite difficult, depending on your character. A high Sneak skill or a lot of magic resistance can be helpful, but the inside of the star is considered well-lit, making sneaking difficult. The Atronach Stone, or the Atronach perk helps greatly, since the enemies you encounter here rely mainly on spells in combat.

It is possible to defeat Malyn before he can flee further into the star by immediately exiting conversation with him and using an attack that paralyzes or staggers him, such as a power attack, a spell or poison with a Paralyze effect, or Unrelenting Force. This is especially useful if you are having trouble dealing with the magical damage this location's foes throw at you.

If you have a few spare clothing / armour enchantment slots be aware that Fortify <Magic Skill> enchantments will make the 'charge' of weapons that use enchantments from the same school of magic deplete at a slower rate. So those Soul Gem recharges will last longer and you'll need to carry less of them. Worth doing even if you're not planning on doing any spell-casting, imo.

As far as the boss is concerned:
Invisibility Potion + Sneak Attack + Paralysis Poison = WIN.
