I only have and only ever will play what vanilla and the dlc's offer. In my personal choice, I rarely find myself wearing the helmets of most sets, replacing it with a hood and later on a mask. I will say though, some have always caught my eye, thus I should make two lists based on two criteria

Full Sets:
1: Ebony: I must say it, it seems all too fitting of a black knight, but it shows power and might without having to be overly fancy. It's really my favorite heavy armor of all time and is without a doubt beauty in of it's own
2: Dwarven: Must I explain? For the longest time this set through the series has been amazing, almost unique. It feels.. well.. like a gladiator but a badass gladiator none the less.
3: Winterhold Guard: Yes, almost any guard armor would suffice, but Winterhold's too me has the best color. I just love the look of the guards, but it's so wierd wearing the same as the hold your in.. luckily Winterhold is rather small
5: Dawnguard Heavy: Medieval Knight anybody?
Honorable Mention: Daedric: The only reason it;s not higher up is because it's too flashy really with all the spikes and look, however it does work to seem menacing and dark. It's a good set yes, but it doesn't fit well and stands out too much in comparision the the local trend
W/o Helmets:
1: Dragonscale: The whole armor seems so well made, neither too much nor too little. The tone of color is subtle and it is such a perfect match with a dragon priest mask
2: Cultist: It works so well without the mask, and personally seems to be the best attire for an archer. Again it's one of the few semi-casual
3: Carved Nordic: Personally, this to me seems to be a much better replacement of plated steel. It looks so mighty yet fitting with all the nordic culture and the heavy use of iron and steel by the natives
4: Vampire: What can I say? It looks nice, though at least the male's do. It's along the lines of semi-casual. Most armor seems like it'll be uncomfortable to wear, yet so few seem to fit the dual purpose of attire.
5: Foresworn It's savage, primitive, and yet perfect for a low level armor. It outclasses leather by far but due to it;s origins, it lacks any casual nature
Honorable Mention: Glass: While yes it's cool and all, even shaming elven by far, it seems to go a little too far. Looking at it, I don't know if it's light armor or very bulky heavy armor. It does look like a knight's armor, but there is a point of doing too much

Dragonplate is underrated. I don't know what people have against the helmet, I thought it looked really good. I definitely prefer it to Daedric.

The helmet has issues with clipping. Some of the vanilla hairstyles and large majority of mod hairstyles show through in the area above the face. I personally wouldn't like it even if that wasn't the case. Here is why, the horns. Any helmet with horns or other decorations that stick up where your enemy can grab it is just asking for death. If they do not break your neck outright they are going to twist your head around to where you can't see the next attack and thus can not block or dodge it. Just my little dose of realism into a fantasy world.

Then there is the camp of players who do not like any of the dragon armor because it is just plain ugly, I fall into this camp. It looks like something a barbarian from the back hills threw together out of what he found in the village trash pile. I like my armor to be a bit more refined. Bioware did a better job with armor made with dragon parts in Dragon Age Origins than Bethesda did in Skyrim. This is just my opinion though. As we all know beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I'm not seeing the ugliness in it, I quite like how it looks. And all the characters I have played have never encountered any kind of problem with clipping with the Dragonplate armour, so there's that.

I've never been one to care too much about realism. And I also never saw a huge problem with the way this helmet worked in regards to that, but I'm no expert so nevermind that.

One last thing, I do not like Dragonscale. I like Dragonplate, but not the light armour version.

the dragonbone and ugliness thing, i think it has something to do with the color scheme?

imo daedric has this issue of looking well beyond the realm of useful and going far too intricate for use in combat.

Dragonbone is awesome on stockier players; skinnier players look wonky in it.

Honestly, I'm a fan of elven armor. The helmet could use a little work, but it all comes together so nicely. Andari has been wearing elven armor since about level 12 or so.

As far as named armors go, I love the DB armor. It's very fitting for any sneaky-type character. :)

Elven light is better IMO, doesn't have the pauldrons so it looks better, if less protective.

She had that for a little bit until I realized it provided the same protection as leather armor, and I could improve leather armor further at the time. Granted, I use ironflesh on top of my armor to boost my armor rating in melee, but I still feel more comfortable with elven. I don't mind the pauldrons all that much since I'm wearing a snow bear pelt cloak, which hides them completely. :)

How could you improve leather armour more, it doesn't have a tempering bonus perk unlike the Elven light armour. And it's heavier by a little bit.

Maybe perylous didn't have any refined moonstone, but had some leather.

Does that actually work? I thought the game used whichever armor rating was higher - the mage armor or the regular armor. But I don't know where I got that notion, or if it is right or wrong.

This. I got the elven light armor at level 5. Most merchants don't carry refined moonstone at that level. Leather is abundant, though. :D

@Snail's Pace: You know, I never actually checked to see if my armor rating went up. I just assumed it did. Now I have to boot up the game and check...

There's more than enough Moonstone ore in Whiterun Hold to temper it up a bit and make weapons from...

Armour spells work on top of physical armour, although the mage armour Alteration perks which multiply the strength don't.

Agreed, I really miss the multiple armor pieces from morrowind where you could decide not to wear pauldrons or swap them for pauldrons of a different set that looked better.

That's my second favorite next to fur. It looks nice and protects well.

I actually like fur, but I do wish there was more variety amongst them, especially when you consider how common bandits use it.

^ That reminds me that a Windhelm guard referred to my character's studded armor as "the armor of a brigand" and warned her not to commit any crimes on his watch.

Aren't there like 3 or 4 variations of the fur armor? If any armor in the game has any variation, it's fur armor.

I like Fur Armor, but I like the Forsworn Armor even more. At least for females.

I was more or less referring to how morrowind did in the past, the material it's made of. Granted you can have your default, but it doesn't hurt to have some that are special in there own way..

Back to the op, why all the love/hate over dragonbone? Yet I get a slight feel dragonscale is felt forgotten at times :(

Go back a couple of pages, folks seem to like Dragonscale. I honestly don't see the appeal.

For my Redguard Badass Mofo Curnac all his female followers wear beefed upped fur (just kilt) armour. Hey, I quite beng a chauvinist pig because the b*tch*s just hate that s**t!
I personally think the coolest is dragonscale followed by the Ebony mail. I also miss the Morrowind system of armour and clothing.
