Can you tell us if they are all literally "brothers", in which case they are all male?

Literal is definitely not a word I would apply to this riddle.

No. I think you may need to think even less literally.

it could of course be one of... Hm... Might it be a dragon priest, or one of Savos Aren's companions who are talked about?

Morokei or one of Aren's companions in the first?

You have been in the right vicinity for two of the brothers, but you don't quite know what you're looking for yet.

With your guesses so far, I'm not sure you would recognise the brothers as brothers yet.

Ok that would be a very simple answer, but the blood part makes me think about Vampires and Werewolf, like the Companions.
While the last part could be linked to Motierre, and the fact that he tried to kill the Emperor.
Also a lawman can be understood as someone that know the laws of science or magic... a necromancer?
Or dragon priest maybe?
By the way, very nice riddle :D

Now you are thinking more laterally, but you're grasping a bit. I suggest looking at the hint about vicinity first...

It would be a simple answer. I suggest that thinking too literally about the bloodline will probably put you off.

And thanks for the compliment, but maybe you won't think it so great if I've been a little too obscure.

reposting

I've made a couple of changes that should make it a little clearer.

As a team, you have identified the area of two of the three brothers. Look around these areas and try to see who or what you find. There is something fairly obvious that unites the three brothers.

We are three brothers.

The first is a soldier
and he carries the prize of a god
He stands looking at a maiden who never moves
Shadowed by a quarter-month moon

The second is a lawman
who stands at a meeting of ways
He is known for his lack of mercy
and yet he was moved when those in his captivity perished

The third is the greatest, the largest
A man whose power once contested with the blood of kings
Now he spends his days complaining
About those who follow he who made the sun-like hole

Who are we three brothers
And what binds our bloodline?

I think the last one may be Mehrunes Dagon, but I'm not sure about the other ones. Maybe two other Daedric Princes?

It must be Jarls, methinks... They could fit.

The third is Korir of Winterhold, if it wasn't that he isn't particularly great.

The second could be Balgruuf, since Whiterun is central, but I can't place it with the captivity and no mercy thing.

And the first: Well... If the Jagged Crown counts as the prize of a god, it could easily be Ulfric Stormcloak.

Alternately: Dragon Priests? In that case, the last one would be Morokei. The second COULD be Rahgot, and the first...Eh... Nahkriin or Konahrik.

A near miss with Korir, but everything else is off.

OK, a real hint. Normally, if you're like me, you will try to decode this riddle using the UESP wiki. I highly recommend this time, if you have worked out two of the locations of the brothers, go into the game and look around.

Someone has given an answer to the first one that gets the general location right, but gave it with a list of other places. Go back through the answers and you will find it.

I can't find any guesses giving any concrete naming of locations in regard to the first stanza. I can only find my musings on the third one.

"he stands looking at a maiden who never moves"
This reminds me of the lady or lover stone, who both depict women. And as they are stones, they never move.
Other than that, it might be the statues of meridia, azura or boethiah.
Another possibility might be a statue of Dibella

I'm back to have another go.

So, let's have a look here.

First of, they aren't brothers who have the same parents.
From what I've read thus far, I assume they aren't truly faction based either.
In that case, I'd say they're male members of the same race.

If the prize of a god ain't an artifact, I'm thinking a blessing of sorts. Something spiritual rather than material.

The blood of the kings refers to the septim line... or perhaps the Mede's?

I had been wondering wether Magnus had something to do with the last paragraph, and after your changes, I'm certain.

It was Magnus who had created the sun by tearing a hole through the planes of Oblivion to Aetherius. The hole was then known as the sun.
Litteraly, it were the Magna Ge who had followed Magnus and thus created the stars.
So, perhaps someone's complaining about the stars.
Now, Korir was a near miss. So, we have two possibilities: either the third paragraph refers to a jarl or someone in Winterhold.
Now, I'm inclined to say it is someone in Winterhold, Nelacar.

Nelacar complains about Azura's star and Azura herself.

The second paragraph isn't about a jarl or a dunmer.
So I guess we'll have to look for Altmer people or Daedra worshippers.

I also believe Ancano is meant in one of the paragraphs, though I have no idea why (it's just something I assumed reading Edgucator's reactions on already made guesses).

Anyway, that's all I have for now, I'll get back to it later.

Okay I'll take a guess, is the first one Nelacar, the second Runil (the Priest of Arkay in Falkreath) or Ondolemar, and the third Ancano?

Wrong Track

If the prize of a god ain't an artifact, I'm thinking a blessing of sorts. Something spiritual rather than material.

Why do you think the prize isn't an artifact?

The blood of the kings refers to the septim line... or perhaps the Mede's?

Yes, but it is being applied in a way you haven't thought of.

I had been wondering wether Magnus had something to do with the last paragraph, and after your changes, I'm certain.

It was Magnus who had created the sun by tearing a hole through the planes of Oblivion to Aetherius. The hole was then known as the sun.

Here, you're in the right space, but coming to the wrong conclusion. My question is if Magnus is in the third paragraph, why is he part of the answer to the first?

The second paragraph isn't about a jarl or a dunmer.
So I guess we'll have to look for Altmer people or Daedra worshippers.

You're right in that it isn't a jarl or dunmer. You're wrong about Altmer and Daedra worshippers.

I also believe Ancano is meant in one of the paragraphs, though I have no idea why (it's just something I assumed reading Edgucator's reactions on already made guesses).

I'm kind of wondering how you got the idea of Ancano as well. No, Ancano is not part of the answer.

Okay I'll take a guess, is the first one Nelacar, the second Runil (the Priest of Arkay in Falkreath) or Ondolemar, and the third Ancano?

No, no and no

OK, hint time, as you have some of the ideas but you're way off base. Look up the words Metonymy and Syndoche.
