I am quite possibly wrong, as I don't have time to check, but is there an option to turn off the crosshair in the options menu? I seem to remember there being one in the vicinity of subtitles, but I may be mistaken.

There's a slider in the menu labeled "HUD Opacity". Throw it down to the left in order to turn both the crosshair and the compass invisible.
Avron, like DS said, you can turn down the opacity, or like someone else said, use the console command. Just hit "~", type "tm" and enter. The HUD will disappear. Rinse and repeat to turn it back on.

Bad: Waking up in ruined shack in the middle of nowhere. Worse: You don't know how you got there. Worst: Mother-in-law seriously angry and outside your door.
