Personally, i wouldn't start DB untill the main quest and Dawnguard have both been completed. Would advise you not to go there at a low level as you will die. I learned that the hard way.

If you can beat a draugr deathlord with relative ease you should be fine.

ETA - make that two simultaneously.

I wouldn't say you have to beat the main quest, just that you need to be at least lvl 25 when you go. Once you reach that point, it doesn't really matter when you go as long as you've met the DB's quest line requirements.

Absolutely. That and it gives you something delicious to look forward to once you are done defeating the bad asses of Skyrim. You could always use it for role play reasons, too. My Bosmer has barely done any quest lines (aside of Companions) and she's already gone to Solstheim once for the thrill of adventure, since husband Vilkas said he felt like traveling to Morrowind.

But there's a lot of opportunity to get a good butt whooping there, so I wouldn't advise going under level 40 at a minimum.

I went on a previous character with Jenassa at level 18. I reloaded after we were both killed just outside of Raven Rock and then we left. I didn't return for another 10 levels, and while it was not easy, it was manageable.

it is, but tbh if you go there at lowish level, it feels a lot like playing morrowind.. just be careful

the ash monsters are pretty devestating for a new character, but then again so were the flame atronarchs near Morandus (spelling?) when i went on one of the early "take a message" type chores for the mages guild in balmora lol

I would even hold off until level 40+. That's when I went there, and many of the enemies still gave me major trouble, and this was only on expert. There's plenty of stuff to do in Skyrim, don't rush to Solstheim.

At 37, you should probably be good. At early twenties it can be really frustrating, but 37 sounds like a nice time to go and still get a nice challenge.

Level 10 is just a death wish. I know this from experience.

I went at Level 2 once. I ran to the dead guard, stole his gear and then ran back to Skyrim. Needless to say, I was really over powered for 18 levels.

And like Bread's example, I made a level 1 dunmer character go to Solstheim. After my level 81 quite OP altmeri main's run through, who it must be said died twice doing the DLC, I had an idea of what to do and what to expect.

Turns out that there are 3 draugr deathlords in Raven Rock mine if you first go there at level 1. They were tough, but worth it though, thanks to their ebony weapons.

Which even then only just made her vaguely able to not get killed as much...

I've survived on solthseim at level 12, only on adept however, and staying within raven rock for most of it(Roleplay), although teldryn and I did stop general carius

Impressive. He was a difficult opponent when I encountered him. That hammer hurt.

My Nord was the first character of mine who stepped onto Solthseim, and that was at level 35ish. I wanted to hold of 'till after I did the Civil War questline, but was impatient. There have been some harder fights, even on Novice, which I always play at. I'd definitely hold off to at least the mid-twenties, depending on your play style and difficulty. Naturally, higher difficulties, higher level.

He was an alchemist, most of his inventory was self made health potions, I had to use them all since teldryn went down in the first 5 seconds, as usual on solthseim, but when you take him back to skyrim...

The trick is not getting hit and being lucky with the chaos enchant. But mostly the former.

 I didn't pull of the "not getting hit" part very well. It took me three or four times to drop him. Once I finally just went in with everything blasting at him, I was able to stun him and then get several hits with my mace and war axe before he could respond. He was rather easy to beat IF, as you said, you can avoid being hit by that damn hammer.
