He's a living Elder Scroll that's achieved sentience and a sense of irony. That's the best explanation I have for his constantly breaking the Fourth Wall. He sees beyond the limits of time, space and kalpas. No Divine or Daedra can do that. Not even the Godhead can..but the Elder Scrolls have no limits.

Or he's just a wandering cat, descended from other wandering cats.

There is no difference between what you said and what I said.

Actually, there's a huge difference. In your's he's a fragment of creation from outside time. In mine he's just a male khajiit who runs into the player character, has some amusing lines, a quite dark one about fur, and some about various changes to the games.

Piece of dialogue I found:

M'aiq (Skyrim version):"M'aiq's father was also called M'aiq. As was M'aiq's father's father. At least, that's what his father said."

It's pretty unlikely that all three of the Liars are related to each other, but it would make sense. A little bit... :|

He's a crazy Khajiit that drinks too much skooma. not a god.

Three's a lucky number! ;)

M'aiq is comic relief. I think elevating him to something he's not (a Daedric Prince) misses the point and just makes it a bit too crazy. You don't have to justify everything with lore. Really. Some of it is just a game, you know...and thus for giggles!

M'aiq could be the Khajiit version of Sanguine.

Sangiin is the Khajiiti equivalent to Sanguine (one of the few religions that has an equivalent)

I see. I guess it would fit the Khajiit well. What are the other cultures that have an equivalent?

Maybe Sangiin had a child and M'aiq is the result.

M'aiq is a liar you shouldn't believe anything he says.

M'iaq is actually the Daedric Prince of lying but he made annoyed the rest of the princes thus was forced into a mortal body and is plotting to get enough claipers in order to undo the curse. It may have been Sheogorath's idea on how to undo the curse.

Or he is just a wandering Khajti that is descended from M'aiq the liar's grandson, who happen to own the book of things to tell people who are destined to become heroes.

He no lies, only we are blind to his words.. Wait>_> If one speaks words, how can we see them0.o
Anyways he's crazy, smart, and really fast. I just like to believe he is a time traveling cat that can't keep pace with his adventures.
I really hope they add another one on the online>_<

i like this idea, the scrolls are the only thing in lore that can explain Ma'Iq canonically

if the scrolls are the source of Ma'Iqs condition, could he be an ex-Moth Priest who has the ability to see through the barriers of time and space but didn't go blind/mad - or if he did go blind, his vision of time is so perfect he can "see" himself in the now as well we can see visually.. rather like Paul Atreides could once he became the Kwisatz Haderach ?

perhaps the Khaajit have their own "elder scrolls project" or library and do their own studies of them..

or he's a sort of feline Doctor Who

I like to see him as the representration of the fans opinions on the TES series, manifested in a comical way that adds a sense of humour to the otherwise bleak world of Tamriel.

Or ....... you know. A cat who's had too much skooma. Whatever works.

yes, too much skooma might also allow a being's perceptions to penetrate the space/time continuum

Maybe he was born on a secret moon in the mage sign for his intelligence and the skooma is because he worships sheggorath?

I think its just for giggles. Like the pickaxe on top of the throat of the world.
Or on the other hand, in where were you when the dragon broke, moon sugar is alluded tp having some pretty powerfuld magic properties. So maybe he just ate a bunch of it

This. :D

Or maybe he tried to read an Elder Scroll at a time scar and its constantly throwing him around in time!

He read an Elder Scroll during the Dragon Break and for every possible outcome of A Warp in the West, a M'aiq was thrown forward in time (and maybe backwards! Only ESO will tell :) )
