It has always been the worse part of the ES games I don't care if its real time or not it just has to be not broken, that's it that is a ES game great lore bad combat. So why is everyone so bugged by it?

They're stupid.

EDIT: They're stupid and very conservative.

EDIT 2: They're stupid, conservative and like to moan about things.

I mean, as much as I love TES the combat has always been crap. A change of pace and adding more variety will definitely only improve the overall experience.

because people have certain expetations with regards to their games. And most people I know haven't really played turn based games since Final Fantasy series.

I personally get stuck on what else is there to the game besides combat. Combat in TES isn't the greatest, but at least I prefer Skyrim/Oblivion's to what's present in modern MMO's

Except that you can do this in a lot of modern MMO's such as Guild Wars 2 etc and most likely will be able to in TESO.

Not sure about GW2 but what I'm refering to doesn't actually happen in any modern game that I've seen to date. I'm not just talking about environmental immune creatures/npc's.

C'mon, just "Fus Ro Dah" that enemy into the Lava Lake. Almost as much fun as blowing/knocking Falmer off ledges

Fus Ro DAAAAAAH
Might be able to skip him across the lake skip skip sizzle

Wait, are you saying that this game should have better mechanics behind combat because combat sucked in the RPGs?

Or are you saying combat is horrible as a whole, so we should focus instead on breeding teddy bears and harvesting lollipop blossoms growing within an enchanted grove of cotton candy trees and marshmallow boulders?

If I'm going to be spending 75% of my time fighting enemies, I'd expect the combat to be decent.

I dunno... the only modern MMOs I've played are WoW + most expansions and SWTOR, and I have fond memories from both games of using special abilities to punt people off cliffs/into fire in PvP. Not a literal kick, but the effect was the same. Maybe we're misinterpreting your claim, though.

I'm more refering to pve not pvp. Players all take environmental damage, usually, it's the NPC's and mobs that tend to ignore it.

Combat was always good in TES (well a little clumsy in Daggerfall) because I knew what to expect and I always treated it like an RPG.

Being one of the few true roleplaying games that bears the tag (RPG) Morrowind implemented movement and combat the way a paper RPG would. That means you control your character's movement and decide what actions they should take, but performing those actions are completely in the hands of your character. Your skill shouldn't matter when it comes to hitting your enemy with an attack because it detracts importance from chance and your character's skills, which is where a traditional rule-bound (i.e. non free-form) RPG should be balanced. Later in the series more concessions were made to make TES more of an action game where player twitching skill became more important especially in combat.

I guess some (most?) players don't accept what an RPG is and they would really want an action adventure instead. TES and ESO already is a blend of those but that won't suffice for those that just want action. To them a game equals combat and the rest is just filling.

this

rpgs are fighting games with extra bits, the fighting has to be epic, exciting and rewarding whether you're zapping or smacking

The development of fighting through Oblivion and Skyrim is an important part of the TES evolution imo, especially in how the perks directly alter the actual combat experience, instead of behind the scenes probabilities

Interestingly, that seems to be a common complaint about turn based or hotbar based combat. It seems there's nothing that will please everyone.

No, it wasnt. Guess you never used magic.

People seem to mistake graphics [&@%!] with bad combat, since there were no flashy animations or physics in previous games. But in reality the ES has given the (creative and imaginative) player just as many ways to dispatch foes as any action game. And unlike most action games that only focus on one aspect (stealth, magic,sword/board, etc.), the ES attempts and succeeds at all three.

The Skyrim combat mainly consists of spamming Rt (or whatever key you use on PC and PS3). There was very little skill behind how you played, sometimes if you are fighting a more powerful enemy you may prance around a bit and every now and again attempt to strike said enemy but at the end of the day it came down to having higher stats and hitting Rt faster. Monotonous.

Oblivion was similar, except you were faster and some enemies seem to take several dozen hits to kill. Monotonous.

Morrowind was more based on dice roll mechanics, so it didn't really matter if you should be hitting them.

Now to answer the question combat wont make that much of a diffence to me, I'll spend 75% exploring Valenwood forests and I hope that PvE combat is good, though as I've said before combat isn't everything to me in Elder Scrolls.

Yeah, there was nothing wrong with combat in the previous games. Just as button mashy as any action adventure game.

Haha, you actually think magic is fun in ES? The spells are very generic and dumbed down. Since they don't scale, you'll end up with about 5-6 spells that are actually efficient to use on your level and they all have very boring effects. Also, they're all pretty much the same. You start off with Summons Skeleton, move on to Summon Scamp, to Summon Atronach and then Summon Dremora Lord. You can also throw fireballs, but only one type of fireball with no additional effects. Hooray.

I know magic is fun in the ES, since you know, Ive played them. Sorry to hear you lacked imagination or creativity. Magic in Skyrim took a hit, but since you're basically just talking about flashy graphics and animations, that would seem to be right up your alley. Magic in previous games (with SC) was amazing, but even with Skyrim's dumbed down magic, it still does it better than any action game has.

No. I've played them aswell, but our opinions clearly differ. I do not lack imagination, when I buy a game I want content, not just a hollow shell to cover up all the games flaws. I love the exploring and world in TES, but try to I avoid combat, because I think it's awful.

Then get creative with the magic, it's not hard.

You can't in Skyrim (you need mods). But this thread isn't just about Skyrim's magic or even combat, but the series as a whole. And getting creative with magic in an ES with SC is pretty much second nature. Weren't you in the SC thread, advocating it? Are you telling me the only thing you did with it was scale vanilla spells?
