What's the difference between successfully blocking with a weapon and a shield?

In a game, or in real life?

In real life, a good block with a sword means you can kill your opponent with a single-time counterattack.

Seriously?

Why do you think I posted this on the UESP? I was asking for the differences in any of the Elder Scrolls games.

If I asked for reality I'd go to 4Chan.

No.

I only ask because you neglected to specify any particular game— be it Morrowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim. The mechanics are a little different between the three.

In Oblivion, the difference is in the amount of physical damage stopped by the block. You can still have a shield marked as 'equipped' while you're wielding a two-handed weapon, thus you'll still have whatever magical bonuses brought by that shield.

In Skyrim, going two-handed means giving up the enchanted benefit of your shield.

In both games, depending on the weight of your shields, and your level, you would move slower with a shield.

I take it like this: heavy shields absorb more damage than light shields upon blocking successfully. But what is the difference in blocking with weapon and a shield?

In every game, blocking absorbs the most damage.
