I'd say neither. I'd read it as Nya-da

I agree with skullclutter on Njada, though I used to think of it as Nyad-ja because I was reading it wrong. So many of my issues could be fixed by not skimming, alas.

Edit:

Also, Lore-ay-dahs, Jag-ger and, for some reason, Ah-troh-nack. When Urag said Atronachs in Skyrim I was so confused until I read the subtitles because wut. That wasn't how I thought of it.

Barenziah? Zee or Zai (as in eye)? Stress on REN or BAR?

I think it would be a good idea to include proper pronunciation guides, and even audio files, for commonly mispronounced, or unique words (like Chitin or dreugh) over in the wiki pages. Any thoughts on this?

Chitin and cuirass are actual English words, so I don't think it should be our place to teach people how to say them. But I think it could be helpful to give a pronunciation for TES-specific words.

I consider this a very intelligent and considerate idea, Deandra. I like it better than my original actually. But being a real-world word, surely some sort of "official" pronunciation exists. I understand where you came from when you made your post, but accent or cultural inflection aside, there is a right and wrong way to say things. Or so I thought.

@likelolwhat: While it doesn't progress to an answer in regards to the pronunciation of antronach, I too was a little surprised to hear it said Ah-tron-ack, having always said it Ah-tron-ock

Actually, let me revise that. I thought it was Ah-troh-natch. Which is even worse in my mind. >_>

Of course. I just don't see the need to do what an online dictionary already does better.

I've said "Low-red-as" for a while but I recently find myself saying "Lore-das". I guess I never really put much thought to it.

I say "atch-ro-nack" and "yay-ger".

I lean heavily on the notion that the voice actors themselves aren't properly familiar with the intended utterances. I long ago planned that if I ever met Kirkbride or any of the devs, I would be all, "how do you say this?"

FWIW (hear my western PA accent):

Loredas - like Jeep Laredo, but ending in "us" instead of long 'o'
Jagar Tharn - JAG arr, th like THought, not THen, rhymes with barn, or that's how I said it until Captain Picard corrected me
Atronach - ATCH ra knack
Barenziah - ba REN zee ah
Chitin and cuirass were already familiar to my ear, but uncommon to read, so that throughout Morrowind I was mentally mispronouncing them, badly.
Dreugh blew me away in Oblivion. I couldn't imagine it having a short 'e' vowel sound, much less a hard 'g' at the end. In my mind it was always droo or droh.
Orcish names sound odd to me, too, when the actors really stress the gender vowel in the middle. I always read it as a brief grunt with a guided inflection.

Thank you. That's how I have been saying it, but I wasn't sure. The "xhi" could had been making a "chi" sound, so I wanted to make sure.
