i could play it with Text if i forced myself through it, but it would be a lot less enjoyable.

i mean, Voice acting adds to Drama and to the charm of characters.

for example, imagine if the Khajiit voices of Skyrim were removed, or if you could only read ''and Close shut the jaws... of Oblivion''.
its not the same.

This is the year 2013. We have active space probes scattered all over the Solar system. We are researching dark matter. Everyone has video phones.

I think that computer games in this day and age will be firmly entrenched in the realm of "talkies".

Have you ever read a book? If so did you find it less enjoyable than the movie version? I know of NO ONE in my own life who has prefered the movie version over the book version of any story adapted to the big screen, whether they watched the movie first, read the book first, it doesn't matter. Its universally accepted that people always prefer the book version rather than its counterpart film.

same difference here.

So instead of buying the next Elder Scrolls game, go buy the strategy guide and tell us if it's the same.

I know I'm late to the party, but..

All video games should be rendered as text--a la TI-83 style. Because, you know..screw everything that makes video games fun.

Interestingly enough, I wonder if that has to do with simple nostalgia or the differences between reading a book and crafting up your own image of the world and characters versus seeing a movie and having the guess work taken out. We were discussing in my cognitive psychology class the interesting fact that, while imaging something and seeing it generate the same results, people typically prefer not to visualize. I wonder if it depends on who you are as a person. I much prefer reading books to watching movies.

Well, that, and nostalgia. Any movie of a book I read as a child will never be amazing compared to what I felt when reading it.

But yeah, Dark Spark hit the nail on the head. :P

Wow everyone admitted they would prefer text if it meant more depth on page one. Page two 6 posts in a row with comments like "I don't read unless I have to for school" and people saying they don't find reading fun? I assumed based on the amount of in-games books, most ES fans would also read a lot in their spare time, thus contributing to why they like the series.

But alas, not everyone can be an intellectual. The A.D.D generation is here to stay it seems.

I'm not gonna buy the next TES no matter the fancy gimmicks they supposedly add.

Edit: I tried mailing them but apparently the sumbit button at the site is not working (wtf?)

"Dear folks at Beth,

Next time you come up with another TES game, tell us which daedric sitting organ we're gonna kiss FIRST, then fuse in the mainquest. So we'd know what to expect.

That'd be lovely.

Luvs."

I wouldn't be so rash, especially since I'm someone on the first page who said they wished there was more depth to the dialogue. :P

I'm not sure if they've ever done any studies about whether TES fans read a lot in their spare time, but obviously people who like to immerse themselves in a world or are more creative/drawn to reading are probably more likely to read the in-game books. If you don't read in the real world, you aren't going to sit and read a fake book, likely. You can't say, though, that correlations automatically show causation...which is why you can't say that people who read are automatically intellectuals, by the way! (That's like saying, we all read the forums, therefore we're all super smart. I think you're all clever in your own ways, that's for sure, but I don't think it makes you all ivy leaguers!)

But it is 2013, and they're going to retain voice actors: it's become an industry standard, given the technology. Now, does that mean they can't give us deeper, more meaningful dialogue? Absolutely not! Will they? I'm hoping that they will, but honestly I'm not entirely sure.

"does that mean they can't give us deeper, more meaningful dialogue?"

first, that question should include the word "won't" followed up by "why."

second, yes, future games will NOT have "deeper and more meaningful dialogue." in fact, the entire elimination of speechcraft, disposition, factions, and, the world reacting to my characters actions is entirely possible.

Sorry, but that's a big failure of logic there. A more relevant comparison would be: Would you watch a silent film in 2013?

I don't have a problem with it in theory, but I play on console - it would wreck my eyes for sure to do all that reading from across the room. :/
