Well, Uriel Septim pronounces it "jhay-gahr", so that's what I go with. For Loredas, I vacillate between "lore-dass" and "lo-ray-dass". And for atronach, I once again take a cue from Uriel and say "æ-tro-nawk"

How do you pronounce Hlaalu? I used to say Ha-Lou-Lou (not sure why) but then someone in Oblivion called it Hal-la-lo

Yeah, I think I vaguely remember hearing it spoken at some point, and I think it was roo-mahr.

Oblivion's dialogue differs. I've heard "roo-mair", "roo-mahr", "roo-mahr-e". It's also pronounced in Skyrim I think, but I can't remember which version is used.

Hi there.

Just a brief question regarding the pronunciation of the word for Saturday in The Elder Scrolls Games, Loredas.

Me and my friend had a minor disagreement (Yes, nerds ;) ) over how you pronounce it.

He says 'Law- Dass'
I say 'Lorry-Dass'
Or perhaps it's 'Law red ass'

I was wondering if anyone here knew the correct way of saying it? Sorry for the random question.

Lard-ass or lewdass

How do you pronounce the Samaire ( a female high elf in morrowind, balmora i think)? Sa-more-a, it looks Gaelic to me.

Doesn't read as Gaelic. I'd say "Sah-Mare".

It's weird seeing how you all pronounce it, being a native Portuguese speaker. It's a language with a lot of stoping ( don't know the technical term for it, like Dah in Fus Ro Dah), for exemple a word that is hard to pronounce here is Paralelepípedo ( Pah-Rah-Leh-Leh-Py-Peh-Doh)

Loredas = Loh-re-dass
Jagar = Jah-Gahr
Rumare = Ruh-mah-re

Doesn't read as Gaelic. I'd say "Sah-Mare".

Well my wife (in real life) her name is Maire (Ulster gaelic for Mary also means bitter)
and she pronounces it More-ah. so you woulld see why i'd think it looks like gaelic to me.

I know some of those Caves and daedric ruins in morrowind are UBER hard to pronounce. if anyone here can maybe name a few in this thread and give the phonetic spelling, that would be great. just for s$its and giggles.

The Daedric ruins don't seem that hard to pronounce, just long. For example, Ashalmimilkala - just break it down. Ah-shal-mih-milk-allah.

This is a fun topic you seemed to have dusted off.
I thought Roo-mar-ee, but don't remember hearing it.
The days are funny, I mess with them Turd-ass/ Lard-ass/ but for Louredas? I think LORE-EH-DAS. So are these that you posted the correct pron.?

Okay let's face it, it is officially cool to use hard to pronounce but cool to spell names in works of fiction. And while some of us present are genius linguists, most of us aren't (I among them).
Through my travels of the interwebs I have chanced upon a few proper pronunciations of some words used readily in some of the games, but also from the voice of the NPCs found within Tamriel as well.

For instance, I have discovered that the word /cuirass/ is pronounced /cure-as.s/ (Pardon the skirting of the swear filter there mods, but it is the best, American keyboard method I could come up with on short notice.) Until I discovered this, I pronounced it /kur-uss/.

Other instances: /dreugh/ I pronounced /droo'/, whereas it is apparently pronounced /dregg'/ (according to NPCs in Oblivion).

Lastly, and I believe there was a topic about this in the Morrowind subforum a few years back, but I pronounced /Chitin/ as /Chitin/ (the sound ch sound found in words like /church/, /couch/ or /lunch/. Supposedly it is pronounced /kite-inn/ (hard 'k' sound, long 'I').

As a side note, I think it would be a good idea to include proper pronunciation guides, and even audio files, for commonly mispronounced, or unique words (like Chitin or dreugh) over in the wiki pages. Any thoughts on this?

Chitin and cuirass are actual English words, so I don't think it should be our place to teach people how to say them. But I think it could be helpful to give a pronunciation for TES-specific words.

there is some in-game pronunciation which impacts on 'real words'

example: the orc librarian and at least one of the lady altmer wizards in the college of winterhold refer to you as 'ark mage', whereas i think the humans pronounce it 'arch mage', which is how I would say it
i have also heard npcs pronounce words differently to how I would, which I thought might be the voice actors/coaches being unfamiliar with the terms.. but the arch mage example seems pretty deliberate
