I'm talking about these:

Dunmer:
+10 Destruction
+5 Alchemy, Illusion, Alteration, Light Armor, Sneak

No Archery or One-Handed Bonus? Two of the bases of the Dunmer tri-intergrated combat technique. Seriously, Dunmer have never gotten Alteration , Illusion or Sneak bonuses before. See: Morrowind, Oblivion and this Lore extract:
Quote:
On the battlefield, Dunmer are noted for their skill with a balanced integration of the sword, the bow and destruction magic.

Imperial:
+10 Restoration
+5 Destruction, Enchanting, Heavy Armor, Block, One-handed

No speech bonus? And further, Magical Bonuses? In addition, Light Armour seems more of an appropriate bonus than Heavy.
Quote:
Though physically less imposing than the other races, the Imperials have proved to be shrewd diplomats and traders, and these traits, along with their remarkable skill and training as light infantry ...

Redguard:
+10 One-handed
+5 Destruction, Alteration, Smithing, Block, Archery

Since when have Redguards been good at Magic? They distrust Mages as a society.
Quote:
The practice of eastern magic, or "Nudri-hi", is greatly frowned upon by Crown and Forebear alike, and outsiders are not tolerated in many parts of Hammerfell.

In fact, a lot of the other races have boosts that don't seem to fit so well with the past, although these are the main ones. What might be the reason do you think?

It's rather odd that Imperials don't have Speech, but Bretons and Nords do..

These have to be wrong, they're too off in terms of the races...You'd think Breton's +10 would be Alteration, Altmer's Destruction....

Okay, so you got the information from the UESP Skyrim Races page, but where did the person who put that up get the information from, because I'm highly skeptical.

Maybe races being in skyrim, or the 200 years since oblivion, have changed thier stereotype.

I guess 200 years is enough time for the main races to evolve geneologicaly and socially, so maybe they have different traits due to this?

To be honest, I wouldnt question it too much until it comes out :P

How would a race known to be eloquent speakers for many centuries become chronic lispers in the course of just two? (just shy of an atomic bomb)

Keep in mind that this is in a different land. Nords having greater speech in Skyrim, their homeland, makes complete sense.

As we say at top of nearly all pages: Details may be missing or can be different from those in the published game. This page will be updated to match actual in-game information as soon as possible.
Try not to complain about mistakes until we have a chance to play the game ourselves. I'm serious, nearly all of the information on the Skyrim pages can't be verified. If you see something odd, just assume that the details are off, or are completely wrong.

That's kinda what I was thinking.

The bonuses seem more regional, to what that particular race would benefit from their hereditary skills.

Where's the source for this? Other than UESP, obviously.

Not so much as loosing articulate ability, more like Nords don’t like "eloquent speakers".
That’s why I listed 2 possibilities.

We don't require sources on most pages in the Skyrim namespace. It was decided these were pointless as we were going to just remove them all anyway. As I said, take all of the information found on pages with the pre-release banner with a grain of salt. They don't exist so much as to provide information, as to get the basic layout of things for after release.

Do Breton have 25% or 50% resistance to magic in Skyrim? On the race page it says 50% but on the Breton page it says 25%.

Well that was a lot of posts in a short space of time. I've been trying to find a source, but have not yet. I'm not so much annoyed by change, just interested in an explanation of some sort, (other than "things change" or "200 years - anything could happen", because they don't say much when you look at them ).

A lot of things are being updated. We don't know. As I've said, look for a pre-release banner (which is present on both pages). If one is present, the information isn't to be trusted implicitly.

Perhaps the dev team altered things for better balance, perhaps these are all just wrong, perhaps these are hereditary traits to these races that only became prominent in Skyrim's environment.

Excellent observation OP. What the heck is going on?

Maybe in-game we will catch wind of 200 years worth of changes among these races.

On Nirn, I guess we all assume time/change occurs slowly. 200 years of changes on Earth would account for alot.

The regional difference makes total sense to me. I'm not going to wrack my brain over something like this anyway.

While those may be explanations, that doesn't quite explain why Redguards suddenly became proficient at Magic. Seeing as Magic is basically outlawed due to the destruction of Yokuda as a result of Magic, it would not be a simple feat to suddenly institute training and scholarship of Magic in the space of less than 200 years, until the entire race became proficient.

Additionally, why were there no regional differences in previous games? That explanation does suit me much either, as it doesn't follow previous examples.

I think the regional differences plus 200 years as compared to 7-8 has changed a lot of what we know.

Restoration just seems odd to be regionally powerful for Imperials...unles they're saying that all Imperials in Skyrim are healers of the Eight Divines...

"Games change" isn't quite the lore explanation as to the change in Redguard fundaments that I'm after. I may never find one, but I'll stand by my previous post on the implausibility of a sudden radical change in the Redguard society over 2-3 generations.

Although I'm sure many would disagree, I'd rather them change lore to balance the game rather than stick to lore religiously regardless of how it may affect the games.

Post subject:  Re: Odd Racial Skill Boosts

Yes, that makes sense, if it were for balance, and if the lore actually changed. I'm happy with any change, as long as there is some kind of explanation as to that change.
