Once you find a favourite race, learning their lore can add depth to your playthrough because you understand who you are playing as, and how they fit into this imaginary world.

By reading about just one race you'll find out about many other things because its all connected.

Also, the play mechanic are very similar to Fallout 3, as far as armour, quests, weapons et c go

...What sort of witchcraft are you referring to? I certainly hope you're not using that as a generic term.

Demon summoning, basically. Conjuration magic summons from the planes of Oblivion, which requires some connection to Daedric magic. It's not witchcraft in the sense "Bubble bubble, toil and trouble."

Which witchcraft is in that sense?

The sort of witchcraft that works really great at keggars and frat parties.

If Skyrim is even close to Oblivion, take this hint: DO NOT play the main quest, instead, take it slowly and easy, and leave that main quest to background. Assuming that Dragon Shouts are something like Sigil Stones in Oblivion, you want to finish the game only after seeing it all :)

EDIT: Taking the main quest last at Oblivion is challenging, but at that point, you will enjoy the challenge ;)

Odd, that. When it comes to playing Oblivion as a very bored war-weary player, I find myself plowing through the tedium of the Main Quest first and savoring everything else (guilds, independent quests, and aimless rambling) as a dessert.

And this is all because I wanted those Sigil Stones first, as I suspect I will want the Dragon Shouts early on in Skyrim.

But in Oblivion, you get _real_ Sigil Stones only after level 17, so you have to have something to do before that :) After level 17, going through "The Dagon Shrine" gives you 50 - 50! - open Oblivion gates (+10 permanent gates), all having one Transcendent Sigil Stone just waiting you to take it :D EDIT: You may guess, that all my characters have quite a collection of those in the upper floor of Rosethorn Hall ;)

Blazing through all the side-quests wasn't part of my journey to 17. More like heavy Endurance training (plodding through the Arena) until Level 12, raiding dens for plunder and buying training sessions for the race towards 17.

And level 17 is about one-third of the span to full maturity for a typical Oblivion character, after all.
