Giving dictatorial powers to a select few to prevent a dictatorship seems to be fairly common in western democracy. Still, guess it's the lesser of two evils.

Every single country in the Commonwealth and the USA. Is 55 countries enough for you?

When you think about it, dictatorship is really the most efficient form of government on paper. The only problem is the people interested in taking over a country by force are not the people you want to take over a country by force.

How exactly are you defining a power? The United Kingdom, India and the USA if you only want massively rich and powerful countries.

The electoral college is outdated and no longer needed. The official reason it's kept in place is so that we don't end up with no president-- as a candidate has to have (I think it's) 62% of the vote in order to actually become a president. In 2000, without the electoral college, and with the current election setup, we technically would not have elected a president.

Actually it's in place so we don't elect a dictator or demagogue. It's a check on the people so we don't elect some tyrant in the spur of the moment.

That was the original use, yes, but anymore all they ever do is vote with the people. I think the way that most states are set up with the electoral college is actually [&@%!] retarded. When the minority votes one way and a small majority of the state votes another way, that small majority gets the entire state's electoral votes. Those minority votes literally do not count.

Actually Wolf is right. Not all states split electoral votes, so even if a candidate only wins the state's popular vote by one they would get all of the state's electoral college votes.

That's a pretty funny vid, but it only underscores how little people know or pay attention to politics today. The race for the President shouldn't be about how "cool" or "boring" a candidate is, but on where they stand as far as their principles.

You may say, "Musicman, that's just a joke video. Nobody takes it seriously." I would respond by saying most people get their political news via satire, especially young people. Look up any political "man on the street" and watch how many of the people interviewed can't tell you who the vice president is, or what social security is, or where the U.S. government gets its money. It's sad how more people care how the President looks than what he actually does.

Please don't misconstrue my statements. I am not speaking out against any President past or present, I'm pointing out that the people of voting age in this country are concerned less and less by the actual politics and more concerned with the image of the candidate.

The thing is, that his political principles are seen as crap to many people as well, so it's easy to criticize his personal life without knowing anything about his political campaign. Still, I love that video HotW!

Which is exactly what most candidates want, I think.

Politics has always revolved at least partly around personality and it always will. It's not necessarily a bad thing as an leaders can often prove their competence by knowing how to make themselves appealing to the people that they need to support them, something that Romney just does not get.

... so that they forget what their real purpose is, therefore being able to make any choices they want with nothing to worry about, the general public more interested in their image.

I still don't see why making fun of someone's personal life has anything to do with the race they are in.

I'm not an anybody supporter, so please don't think I'm being biased. If HotW posted a satirical video depicting President Obama's personal life in the same light I would be just as upset.

It's an ad hominem argument.

Still, it's funny, even if it's not serious. It doesn't have to be true to be funny, though often people misinterpret things like this.

It's like a broken record.

Bush and Gore 2000. Ring any bells? Pretty much goes against what you just said there.

Um... No it doesn't? Not only does it not go against what I said, it's the prime example of the flaw within the system. Bush won because of the winner-take-all system. If the states had split the electoral votes by voting proportion instead of throwing it all in with the small majority, Gore would've won.

I don't care what Romney does with his personal income (as long as he pays his taxes on it). No one should.
