Top figure is ol' Ernie, who took his own head (and naturally, his life) with a shotgun.

There's a lot of Ernies out there, but I'm willing to bet you're good to go with Figure 1, Dark Spark. Which leaves a last name for "Ernie", the identity of Mystery Man 3 (come on! I thought he'd be the easiest one!), and the thread which ties them all together.

All died of suicide to the head? I can't find Ernie using wikipedia.

Wait, maybe all died of suicide by the weapon they're pictured holding...

*sigh*

Ernest Hemigway
Yukio Mishima
Hunter S. Thompson

All depicted with the instruments of their own demise.

Bored now.

Sure took you long enough!

Don't get bored yet, we're relying on you to think of a question! Dark Spark wins (although technically it's "all neurotic authors depicted with the instruments of their own demise").

You're sitting in the cockpit of a P-38 Lightning, getting ready to take off for a sweep over Rabaul. You've completed mag check, prop run-up and gave the photo of your sweetheart a good luck kiss. You push the throttle past two-thirds in order to spool up the turbos, then you get the big girl up to forty inches and begin the takeoff roll...

...what tank position are your fuel selectors currently set to? And why to those specific tanks?

Actually, I wouldn't fly on reserve tanks. I'd take off on the main tanks, then drop the reserves, still full, 150km away from Rabaul in order to make my P-38 more maneuverable for combat. Suddenly not having enough fuel to return to base, I'd radio in a garbled distress call, bail out, and crash into the South Pacific, washing up on a sun drenched shore and spending the rest of the war living in an island paradise, frollicking in the ocean with a surfboard made from my plane's wing and training monkey butlers to fetch me coconuts for my nightly tropical feasts.

Jeff wins. Actually, Google wins, but at least Jeff demonstrated superior Google-fu.

Doros— the reserves happen to be internal fuel tanks, just ahead of the mains. If you 'dropped' the reserves, the lack of fuel would be the least of your problems— the big ragged holes in your center wing would be of much greater concern.

I just did not want the topic to stall.

I'll pass.

This one's considerably easier than the last. What are these paintings, and what's the common thread?

Well, the middle picture is, obviously and easily, the Norman Rockwell self portrait of him painting a self portrait.

I want to say the first is a self portrait of.. Da Vinci? I've only seen him aged, but it does look a bit like him.

The last.. I have no clue, but I assume its another self portrait.

The last is a self-portrait by Frida Kahlo. But that was just an easy straight google search, didn't recognise it otherwise.

Decided it was worth a google for the other as well, and I take it it is Albrecht Durer's self portrait? Or failing that, Louis Corvath's self portrait, based on Durer's?

P.S. if I did get those two right, I only got it cause of Raikarr so the question is more fairly Raikarr's.

You and Raikarr fight over the next question, then! Durer, Rockwell, Frida-of-the-Unibrow-and-Female-Moustache, all self portraits.

I got one right, weka got two right, I say weka gets it. Plus I probably wouldn't be able to think of a good question that wouldn't be easily googled.

I don't think that there are any questions out there that are no longer googlable....

How about (this is difficult not to make something too country-specific as well!)......

Visited long ago
In solitude now
A reflection only
Not my own glory
Colder than ice
No breath here
A feather, a hammer, a step....
