Nope. Dwarves was coined by JRR Tolkien (at least when referring to fantasy dwarfs) because it was more logical (eg. We say rooves, leaves etc.)

Dwarfs is the standard plural of the noun dwarf. This has been so for centuries. Dwarves is a variant popularized (though not invented) by English author J.R.R. Tolkien in his fantasy fiction works, including The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The Tolkien spelling is appropriate when referring to little people in fantasy worlds. Dwarfs is better everywhere else.

Dwarf also works as a verb meaning to cause to appear small in size. In this sense, dwarf is inflected dwarfs, not dwarves, in the singular present tense.

There is controversy over whether dwarf is ever an appropriate term for real-life people, but we won’t go into the nomenclature issues here.

@Stormborn n how to post pics: right click the image, selefct 'View Image'. it should then read as a JPG in the address bar. Copying that address and paste it between the IMG tags in the full post editor.

In regard to what a krisknife looks like: EW! The curves go the wrong way. A krisknife goes up then down, from the handle. Which is backwards. it should go down THEN up. Far better looking. besides, how is a knife with a downward curve supposed to be used exactly? With an upward curve at its tip it makes sense for a wide sweeping strike. Not to sure how to do it with a krisknife.

EDIT: Sorry for the double post mods! (begs for mercy)

@POMC: Assuming you are referring to my English joke as being insulting, I get that a lot. I don't socialize a lot, and as a result I tend to be insulting in the most unexpected and least desired ways. Like I said in my post, I did not mean it to be so. I do apologize if it is.

@POMC again. You may be classy for living in castles, but I bet you are as drafty as heck in 'em.

Fair enough. Thanks. I guess because Tolkien basically invented the dwarfs as a fantasy people, it is acceptable to use his name for them.

I can say law and saw without adding an 'r', actually. :P

Also, if you want I can summon a dwarf and he can hit you round the face with a piece of paper reading "dwarves" in dwarvish.

Yeah, but the Germans don't speak English, so Tolkien was the one who introduced the English word for the dwarfish race.

*groans and facepalms*

Tolkien stole dwarves from germany. Seriously. When they're a fictional race he created an entire culture HIMSELF for? :P

Also, POMC: It depends on what universe the summoned dwarf comes from.

No. It is dwarves. You were referring to Tolkein's race.

He means the word!

My universe!

And to break the argument!

True. They are still dwarfs though. Let us leave it there.

I'm surprised Avron hasn't popped her tuppence worth in here.
