Drawing a knife with lots of graceful curves is like trying to find the perfect(ly contoured) wife: the proportions must be just right.

I was asked to design and make a knife for my dad's friend, a feat I was happy to undertake. But this one seems to be really kicking me. The first knife I made from a pattern here on the internet. This time around I am moving from the ground up, without any outside help, except perhaps any critique from my family that I request.
The whole concept of this knife, which is in many aspects similar to the first one I made, was to have a "curvy" knife in which all those curves flowed together gracefully. Another building considerations was the fact that it is to be a wall piece, simply to be looked at but not used. I intend, and am going to make it so that it CAN be used, but I want it to look graceful too. However... making the handle and blade meld as one in a perceptively pleasing way is rather difficult (for me). Normally knifes, or any tool for that matter isn't supposed to look pretty, or at least designed to look so. It is a tool. It wasn't built on looks but functionality. If it DOES look pretty along the way, hey! that's just a bonus.
But in my situation, the constrictions of not being used allow me more freedom to deal with its appearance more so than I normally would. But like I have said, I am finding it difficult to make that pretty appearances "just right". Hence my being here. This is an official break.

Don't forget that a Knife can be ornamental aswell- not just a tool.

This is what my first knife looked like, more or less. Only mine had a bone handle that had a slight curve opposite the main blade wrapped in brown suede, and support a straight crossguard. it was nearly as pretty as the picture provided, and do to my inexperience can only ever be a wall piece, but I am still proud of it.


The one I am making now has no crossguard and a more curved handle then the one in the picture, supporting a similar (for now) pommel. It is still in the drawing phase and is prone (And actively so) to revisions (I have 4, including the original atm), but like said, got tired of fudging with it.

@GAndalf: Even if I did let it become just a decoration, I would still be having the same problems with the handle melding with the blade. Plus i am not nearly that gifted or experienced a knife-maker to know of design structure versus stress of the knife. I make a knife. if it turns out good, well YAY! Lime my first for example. Almost perfectly balanced by accident and chance, though i tell the press otherwise if not and it absolutely blows, I learn from it and move on.
@Justice Knight: An ornamental knife to me is one with loads of etchings and engravings in it. Something I mean to do. been researching metal etching on the side.

Maybe you could make a kris?

My Greatgrandfather had an ornamental knife- he had it engraved after world war two. He absolutely loved that thing- it would always be in his arms reach.
So beautiful- will have to find a picture to post.
