Hey there, nice and helpful computer geeks, got a question for you and your technical expertise.

Basically, if one wanted to record footage of games running in DOSBox, how could they do it? Ages ago I tried to record Daggerfall using fraps (I think) and possibly OBS but didn't manage to like, at all.

Any and all insight for future reference is appreciated.

Hit CTRL-ALT-F5 to us the built in recorder.

Any info on how the footage is stored and/or has to be processed further.

Thanks though, I didn't even know it had one.

It should be recorded as .AVI. You can find it under .../.dosbox/capture.

Note though that DOSBox uses its own video codec, so you'll have to install that in order to play or edit said files. If you're on Windows this can be done by simply selecting the applicable Start Menu shortcut (make sure you do this as administrator or it will simply pretend to install)

Word of warning, though: I've noticed that with certain games (like Daggerfall) the in-built DOSBox recorder [&@%!] up. I don't know why it does this, so it could very well just be that my computer was too slow at the time I last tried this for it to work, but if you're going to be recording Daggerfall or highly intensive games like it be prepared to throw away a lot of footage.

EDIT, afterthought: I had some success recording with Fraps, but only when DOSBox was in fullscreen mode, because Fraps doesn't recognize DOSBox windowed mode but it does recognize it in fullscreen. It's strange, but it makes a weird kind of sense when you think about it.
