Figured I might as well touch base on it, but are there any good Abridged series out there? I figured I might as well while short on youtube series to beng. I've heard only of a few note worthy series, and have watched even less than that

Just to clarify, the Abridged series I have seen are DBZ & Hellsing from TeamFourStar(bless those abridging gods) and SAO from SWE. I don't think there needs to be much explanation on the praise to TFS's work, especially when they set the standard onwhat makes a good abridged series <_< If you havent watch either of their series.. go do that now.

DBZ adds a whole new level of depth to the series and frankly speaking can supplement the OC and still give you roughly the same story. As for Hellsing.. mother.. [&@%!]... Alucard. As if he couldn't be any more well liked, and god dammit they did. He very much makes that show, an oh.. that voice... personally I wouldnt have it any other way... except maybe more episodes..

Idk how many of you have watched SWE's version of SAO, or even te actual anime.. My advice, skip the anime, go straight to the abridge >_> With all the flashy animation n wonderful setting, that show fell flat especially with character development. Abridged? Saying it was a vast improvement in development to add an actual personality to a previously bland cast woud be an understatement. Hehe.. If Alucard is #1, then I think Kirito must be 2nd best. I mean.. just watch. Honestly, in every way I love him more than his generic, blank slat self from the actual show, hell even that unmasculine voice

With all tht in mind, are there any valid recommendations I shoud go see.. I'm considering EVAbridged for many reasons(my fav anime review voicing it being one of em..), but it hardly will be enough to beng on

50% is, from what I hear, a great comedic reindition of Free!, so IDK, might be worth checking out if you liked Abridged series stuff.

There's so many badly done imitations of the Abridged format, however, so you have to sift through a lot of crap to find the good stuff.

I know :( I heard of sone of the classic abridges being superb, but I do not feel like shuffling through attempts at pokemon, Yugioh, one piece, naruto, ect.. But it's unrealistic of me to hope for anything near to what I've been lucky to see.. and nowhere near Ghost Stories' dub(seriously, Ik its not an abridge, but it might as well be)

So I've been looking at a few clips of an old anime movie today >_> looks very interesting. It's called Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade and is one of those old school animes before they became popular in the west. Made around the same time as Ghost in Shell..and heck I even get a bit of the same vibe minus once you strip away the cyberpunk(& the badass Major).

It may not have aged all too well and can seem a bit slow paced, but setting and premise wise.. something tells me Kerr will like this  here's a trailer to it. There is a decent dub out there, and alot of iconic ppl in the industry had their hand with its development. Funny how, out of so many 90s anime, how this lil gem never gets mentions :/

Oh I heard about that one, it's Alternate History "What if Germany occupied Japan instead of America?" I've been meaning to check it out for a while, thanks for reminding me.

Okay, after looking through this thread and the anime section on Netflix, I have narrowed it down to 6 candidates for the next anime on my list. Could people please tell me which one I should watch first? Give a reason as well, if possible.

Samurai Champloo
Soul Eater
Death Note
Attack on Titan
Kill la Kill
Fairytail

Thanks!

Death Note, then either Samurai Champloo or AoT. Kill la Kill is a parody of stupid anime tropes, so I'd hold off on that for a while. Good show, though.

Fairy Tail is pretty terrible. Soul Eater is better, but I honestly thought it was mediocre overall. A great idea executed in a mostly lackluster fashion.

Ya Fairy Tail is a shonen that seems to never end.. much like Naruto or Bleach. It may have some good moments... but you'll have to shuffle to tons of filler n bs.

Soul Eater is another popular shonen, but this one actually ends <_< sadly, despite being good, it never lived up to its potential. As Rook said, great idea, poor execution.

Well out of those I've only seen Death Note and Attack On Titan and I like them both. There are OVAs (basically stand alone episodes, just in case you aren't familiar with the term) of Attack on Titan that aren't on Netflix which are excellent. But you wouldn't want to watch them until after you've seen the series.

Psycho Pass is on Ireland's Netflix. It's an excellent Cyberpunk Anime.

Eh, spoilers for Psycho Pass:
Spoiler:
The main character's does kind of annoy me in it. Like the antagonists are right, Sybil needs to go. But she has this innate insistence to never challenge authority. I don't need to agree with the protagonist and for the ending of series 1 it works perfectly, it isn't an issue there. Actually series one works really well stand alone, with a really good ending. Series 2 and the film afterwards aren't bad but they are both weaker than series 1. And the protagonist's insistence to never challenge authority ends up becoming kind of grating as it drags on after Series 1. "I can change things from the inside by in no way challenging Sybil's supreme authority over the entire population." Yeah, that didn't work the last two times Sybil was proven to be irredeemably evil, why do you think it will work this time? You could at least tell people the truth about Sybil.

She's a Lawful Good Character who values the "Law" far more than "Good." Which is fine but it's proven on numerous occasions that Sybil is irredeemably evil and she never changes her tune, I just thought her insistence to not challenge Sybil became ridiculous by a certain point, it felt like Sybil could be planning to kill everyone in the world and she probably wouldn't stop supporting it. It doesn't ruin the show or anything but it did bother me.

Ya, Psycho Pass is wonderful, notably some of it's music. It may not be the damn best cyber punk anime, but it's worth watching, thats for sure. If I'm not mistaken, I tipped you on the series  right Kerr?

You did and I'm very grateful for the recommendation because it was right up my alley.

I'll probably be watching Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade some time this week, I'll post in this thread after I watch it and let you know what I thought about it.

Unfortunately, no Psycho Pass :(

It seems that I'm down to Death Note or Attack on Titan.

Okay, that was a joke bc I have yet to seen it(I'm not a real man, I'm Beta) but i have heard only good things from those that have. I was surprised when an old school friend recommended it, so it is on a list of shows to watch but I am in no hurry

Also, I ought to post a list of my top favorite animes.. Not to be confused with my list of best animes(though similar yes)
List:
1: Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
An anime I cannot recommend any more highly, and one of the first animes I was ever exposed to
2: Cowboy Bebop
Same as above, and certainly an anime that is a must watch given it's rep
3: Psycho Pass(Subbed)
With both seasons, this has risen to be an anime I can watch for the 14th time and still want more
4: Mushishi(+ Next Passage)
Calming, episodic, and just damn good. Not really great for gatherings, but a just reward after a long day at work :3
5: Trigun
Another classic, and while I wasn't crazy with the 2nd half, it has a perfect tone and character development.. also the movie was badass
6: Hellsing Ultimate
Gore, nazi vampires, big ass cannons.. and Alucard above all else, need I explain?
7: Kino's Journey
A good example of how a well written story without the need of an overlapping arc can be
8: Desert Punk
Vulgar humor I just love, well rounded characters, and memorable scenes, gotta love that [&@%!]
9: Death Parade
I've always been a fan of shows with darker tones, This is no different
10: Fate/ Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works
Animation that is so appealing you can literally see the money pouring out from every frame, need I say more

Honorable Mention: Watamote
While not notable in quality or some of its comedy, one cannot help but identify with the protagonist and her introvert ways
Most Anime I've Watched & Some I Would Recommend:
Anything by Studio Ghibli
Summerwars
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Tales from Earthsea(could of been better)
Paranoia Agent
Tokyo Godfathers
The Girl who Leaped through Time
RWBY
FLCL
FMA + Brotherhood
DBZ
NGE +Rebuild movies
Sgt. Frog
Tiger & Bunny
Soul Eater + NOT
Samurai 7
Eureka Seven + AO
Rurouni Kenshin
Claymore
Maoyu Mao Yusha
Inuyasha + Final Act
Naruto/Bleach/One Piece/Fairy Tail
Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt
Kill la Kill(could do without fan service)
Tokyo Ghoul(without censorship)
Parasyte Maxim
Attack on Titan
Deadman Wonderland(rubbish ending)
Gurren Lagann
Death Note
Code Geass
Full Metal Panic
Monster
Baccano!
Black Lagoon
Darker Than Black(season 2 preferred)
Code: Breaker(Meh)
Blue Exorcist(More Meh)
Durarara!!(okay-ish)
SAO(rubbish yet enjoyable at times, also great animation)
Magi(again, okay-ish)
Fate/Zero + Stay Night
Maoyu: Archenemy & Hero
Moribito
Log Horizon
No Game No Life
Terror in Resonance
Spice & Wolf(Best damn female protagonist)
Assassination Classroom
Baka & Test(don't judge me)
The Devil is a Part Timer(in top 10 favs)
Noragami(10 favs)
Steins Gate
Last Exile + The Silver Wing(10 favs)
Appleseed
Serial Experiments Lain
Ergo Proxy
Eflen Lied

I think that's most of them :S and that's from memory...

I tried diggin thru this thread to find my grand list of anime... only to find out it was in GD  So here it is, where it belongs, don't judge me

And might I add this is an older post... so that list has only grown. So if you're wondering why One Punch Man isnt up there.. thats why

Ach, I wanted to narrow down my list, not make it bigger! Ah well, the only one from the top list (I'm not ready to go through the second one yet) that I can watch is Mushishi.

Since I'll be watching with a friend, I think that I'll go with Death Note, then Attack on Titan. I can watch Mushishi on my own in my spare time.

Thanks to everyone for your help!

Edit: I just started watching Death Note and it is so good. I binge-watched the first 12 episodes today and am loving it. Thank you to the people who recommended it!

Warning: Death Note spoilers

Spoiler:
L did not just die. Someone tell me that it's not real. This can't actually be happening, it can't. Don't tell me that L is gone, he must come back, right? It's just some elaborate ploy of his or something. I hate Light so much right now. Why did you do this to me, Death Note? Why?

Why do I have to get so attached to the characters? Now I'm just sitting here eating Cheetos and feeling slightly depressed.

No! Don't say such things! I just finished crying my way through FMA: Brotherhood.

I mean, I guess that it shows that they are good animes, since you get attached to the characters. But
Spoiler:
why L? He was supposed to win and bring Light to justice. - Also, I'm really not liking the new L, or 'N' as I think he is called.
I don't know how much of this I can take.

Well, alot of anime know how to play with your heart strings.. good anime know how completely wreck you.. and not just bc you are invested, but bc you genuinely cared due to the character.. something I wished more anime put nore thought into

Spoiler:
L was a fantastic character, and good adversary/contrast to Light. In my opinion, the 1st half played its cards so well..

Sadly, the 2nd half kind of went into a decline. I blame it largely on part of the loss of L, something you cannot so easily replicate or mimic(sorry N). Quite frankly, his death ought to have been a near finale to the series.. just enough episodes to let it sink in.. but not enough to let the excitement die down

I wont say any more.. just so that I dont spoil any details

Spoiler:
I totally agree. I find that it's kind of like SAO in the way that it has the first story (L vs. Light) and then goes into a weird second story (the contest between N and the other guy). But I haven't actually finished the series, so I can't be sure yet.

And I don't think that I'll ever get over L's death. In the word of the Beatles, "Did you mean to break my heart and watch me die?"

Quite frankly, and I hide this not.. SAO had so much potential but went so much more wrong. Ya its pretty, ya it has great music.. but it lacks direction and more importantly its vision <_<

Rather than a story of how everybody struggled through each floor and the day to day hardships.. we got some bite sizes between large time skips and pointless filler. Season 2 just butchered away any spirit it had left.. and dont get me started on its sequel.

I will however give praise to the sequel's season focusing on Asuna and Yuki's band of friends. It did it some justice.. just not enough to rectify the whole series...

Totally! It had a great premise, but they didn't use it to its full potential. The plot wasn't well thought-out enough to match the rest of it, and I found the whole second season just weird. Though I haven't actually seen the sequel (it's not on Netflix).

I was more just alluding to the fact that the second season of SOA seemed like a bit of a stretch to carry on the plot. It felt like it's own separate thing, which is what this second half of Death Note is feeling like to me.

Listen to me go on about a series that I haven't actually finished yet...
