The man was paranoid and had locked himself in his panic room. The police came to get him. They cut through the door and found him there, still alive and brandishing his gun at them. Being paranoid he would not drop the gun. An officer shot him in seeming self defense and to cover up they said the bullet matched the man's gun.

Edit: or they struggled to get the gun from him and it went off, shooting him in the head.

The old man's arthritis miraculously disappeared and he realized that he can't really do any of those things he always wanted but couldn't because of his disease, because he spent all his money constructing a ridiculous panic room 30 feet under his house. So he went down there, locked the million dollar unbreachable doors and blew his brains out.

Well for the most part I'm out of ideas unless I start getting completely implausible. It's only more confusing because you keep saying we're close with very different answers given. I suppose I can go back to all these answers and see what they have in common. But perhaps you could tell us of the answers given so far which one was the closest so we at least have an idea of which direction to go in.

I've got one more answer to "what would you do if you were finishing that room" - I would sure as hell install some mechanism for opening it from the outside in case of emergency, otherwise it's just asking for a Darwin Award-worthy accidental death. ;) Which makes the obvious suspect the person who built the panic room and hid the emergency unlocking mechanism so well that no one but them and the owner knows about it. But that would make the whole toilet shenanigans rather pointless, so I don't think that's the answer.

Is there another gun? An elastic type if wire could be tied to the gun and somewhere n the hole, so after he shot himself, the gun got pulled into the hole.
