The answer is one, the north pole. You can't walk a mile south if you're already at the south pole.

I'll give it someone else for the next puzzle since I have to be heading home now.

I've got one.

Situation: A man is found dead in a locked panic room, a bullet in his head. There is a gun in his hand, and the bullet matches the gun. The door is a heavy duty vault-style door, and, additionally, can only be shut and locked from inside. When the man was found, the door was, in fact, shut and locked. Inside the room are a number of boxes, and a toilet that had never been hooked up.

Problem: The man is elderly, with crippling arthritis in his hands. Those who knew him attest that he could barely turn a doorknob, and certainly couldn't have fired a gun. If he was muirdered, however, how did the assailant escape? The only passage out of the room was a sewer pipe where the toilet was to go, but it's far too small for a person.

Using the provided diagram of the room as the police saw it, can you determine what happened? Was it suicide or a murder? If suicide, how did he shut the door and pull the trigger? If murder, what happened to the murderer?

(Ignore all the white outside the box, it means nothing. Also, ignore that the door has no knobs/handles, as all that means is I forgot to add them. )

EDIT: The boxes are filled with irrelevant things, and none are or were empty.

Technically, no, but what's inside is irrelevant to the puzzle.

Spoiler:
First of all, it is questionable that he was "found dead" unless the door had a window on it. And there is the question of why the man was in there.

You say what is inside the boxes is irrelevant, but that means the boxes themselves have some kind if relevance. Maybe someone had to climb on top for something?

Haha, yeah, I was wondering how he was "found" too :p. How did the police get in?

The police killed him. They found him because they were locked in with him. He pointed a gun at one of them and they shot him in self defense.

The puzzle does not state that the dead man was alone in the panic room. Maybe the murderer was still there, lounging on top of the boxes.Image

Nor does the puzzle does not mention anything about the ceiling. What is the ceiling made out of? It may be just soil.

Why is the toilet disconnected from the pipe? Maybe the dead man is an unfortunate sanitary technician, who could not attach the toilet to the pipe because of his illness. :(

To clear up some questions: they were looking for the man, and, when they found the panic room locked, cut through the door, and found the man dead inside. The ceiling and floor are solid concrete, the walls are brick, and surrounding the room in all directions are 3 solid feet of concrete. The toilet and boxes are there because the room was going to eventually be converted, but nothing had been done with them yet.

A bit of a hint: the diagram, with the possible exception of Mr. Stick-Figure, is to scale.

Mystery writers are rather fond of the melting ice trick: the criminal props the door up with a block of ice, which eventually melts after he leaves, allowing the door to bang shut.
Image
Then, of course, the poor fellow could have actually died from suffocation, being locked in a closed all-concrete space with no ventilation and a single sewer pipe. :(
The police would have guessed what happened by analysing such facts as: where the bullet entered the man's head and where it ended up and the coordination between the entrance and exit wounds in the man's skull in case the bullet went through his head; if the bullet remained lodged in the head, they would still take the entrance wound into consideration.
It's also important to know if the police found the bullet casing and where they found it.
If we do not need all of this, then the answer is something witty.
I'm also wondering what's behind the boxes, since they are standing against a wall - is there truly a wall behind them, or a secret passage?

The door has a wheel that needs to be turned to lock it, so it couldn't have been propped with ice. The bullet casing was found next to the body, as you'd expect if he shot himself. There're no secret passages behind the boxes, but you're getting ever so warmer.

Alright, yes, but miniscule and covered with heavy iron grates at both ends. (Forgot about those, tbh. )

@Norroen: No. :P

@MM247: If by he you mean the victim, how? If you mean the murderer, how, and where is he?

It could have been an accident: a rat pokes out of the sewage pipe; the old man wants to shoot it, but because of his illness, he shoots at himself instead. :(

I feel like this is one of those things where the guy was killed by a trained monkey assassin that escaped through the sewer. But that doesn't really explain how the door was closed and locked.

Edgar Poe approves. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Murder ... Rue_Morgue
Let's see if Jedi Taters will.

I knew it was something that others were thinking but were too embarrassed to actually suggest.

The man was killed by a lethal snake bite. The resulting convulsions from the venom caused him to strike himself in the head with the gun he was unable to kill the snake with.

I feel like this guy should have a pet monkey...
Spoiler:
The murderer was the man who installed the safe room for him, and he knew how it worked. The safe room guy wanted to kill the old man for money, so he built the safe room not to protect him, but to kill him. He installed a secret crawl space from the basement into one of the boxes/refridgerator. He caused the man to run into the safe room by breaking a window. The man couldn't escape then, so he got inside the room and killed him, locked the door, and went into the secret crawl space and got away.
