It's more like Mars used to be super snarky, and Beta used to be super random, and you've just always been super sweet.

What an interesting notion. Anyway, you're up next. ^-^

If super snarky is the worst you'll call me I'm relieved and at peace with my old posts having been read.

I have a hard enough time coming up with mean things to say about people I don't like. It's not like I'm going to go around saying mean things to people I do like.

Well, you back then could still probably have taught me a lot.

Maybe. I can teach you way more now, though.

@GD: What would you rather learn, the bass or guitar? If you already can play one, what do you prefer about it?

@Mars: Teach me, then!

And I'd probably go for guitar, though bass would be cool too. But you know the thing that really annoys me? My dad plays bass in a band (and has played guitar in past bands). He could have easily taught me to play both. But no, my older sister got all the lessons, while I said "I don't care about learning to play". Bad decision. Very bad decision. I regret it so much, now.

Well, I can't teach you how to play guitar, but I can give you some BASSics. *drum roll*

Like with any string instrument, the first time you hold it, you're not going to know where is what and where do the hands go and gosh this is uncomfortable to hold, and no matter what I do it sounds awful.

Making sounds is never the first step. First, you need to learn grip. What the hand on the neck does is really up to preference; some people hold it between their thumb and fingers, others grip it in the palm of their hand. It will influence your play style, but there's no correct way, no matter what anyone tells you. This is generally true for music. Don't let any boring elitist farts tell you that there's a right way to do things and everything else is rubbish. You can do whatever you want. You just need to want to do it.

Back to the bass. Your right hand plucks the strings, with the index and/or middle finger. Or a plectrum if you're actually a guitarist but you have to play bass in the band because someone else got the spot of guitarist and someone needs to play the bass. The first thing you need to work on is to train yourself to move your hands and fingers independently. Your left hand is going to want to match what your right hand is doing and vice versa. Nuh uh. Strum slowly while the hand on the neck moves fast as heck. Strum fast and only switch notes occasionally. Go off time. Do the exact opposite thing with each hand.

I'm tired now, more later.

I was more referring to the "Maybe. I can teach you way more now, though."

But sure, teach me bass, too, if you want!

Yes, I understood that. That was the joke.

Lesson #1. Make everything you say a joke on some level. Don't explain it, don't expect anyone to find and understand it. Do it for yourself. Jokes should always amuse you before anyone else.

Ah, no! I hate not understanding jokes! Why in the world would I put others through such a terrible experience?

I am pretty good at coming up with things that only make me laugh, though.

I'm curious.. Who had it worse in the WTF meter.. early Kerr? Early Dov? Or post-lore Beta? I'm sure they're all.. Just.. Equally cringe worthy(But really, that hasn't changed now has it?)

I'm curious...if anyone is actually more cringey now than they were when they joined? Thus far it's only been the other way round.

@Beta: I'm curious, as well. Kerr's next, then Dovah, so I guess I'll see.

@Aarah: I wouldn't be surprised if me right now is cringier than me when I joined.

What happened to musicman? This is where he's needed.

Honestly my advice would be find a decent instructor. This is a problem I had growing up, my friends all played guitar and were in bands but they were horrendous teachers. One friend had me doing what's called a crab exercise when I could barely play chords. Terrrrrrible advice, it's a good way to turn someone off guitar. Like all things you want to start with baby steps and go from there.

I disagree with your ignoring the elitist farts concept, but I wouldn't worry about it as a beginner. Regarding the grip, it varies. I generally use my palm but if there's any kinda soloing or whatever then I absolutely switch to thumb. Really comes down to the genre (or bands) you like I suppose.

I've been playing a lot lately and I want to learn flamenco. I tried finding a book at the library but it was all books on how to dance flamenco or the history of it.
edit:Here's flamenco in it's glory

Beta, do not start a war between me, you and kerr over who is more cringeworthy.. We all know what i am capable off and if you value your cakes, anime gifs, stolen memes(I will never forget the stolen pie = cake but it's pie, but it's cake meme that. You memey stealing thief of memes.) and sanity because I am a man with too much time on his hands, increasingly insane and not afraid to go to depths that even Sheogorath won't dare to go.

I wouldn't have any beef with Mars, because she doesn't eat meat. Maybe have a nice vegan burger instead.
