This is probably number one on the list of reasons I am emigrating at the earliest opportunity. For those out of the know, the low-density housing in the city and the fact that studio apartments are basically illegal (both because of current regulations) [edit: among other bad housing policy decisions made in the last 30 years] makes it basically necessary to live either somewhere terrible or somewhere 2+ hours away from where you work (which is what my family currently does) if you're entering the labour market out of college now.

Good luck finding a house/job though. I have a friend who lives in the North Leinster area in the same boat.

Yeah, I have friends who are planning on emigrating within the next couple of years too. Hell, I might emigrate eventually myself. Since the foundation of the Free State and before hand, dating back to the famine really, Ireland has been built on the idea that a high percentage of young people are going to emigrate and uses that as a way to deal with various problems (housing, employment, education, etc) by essentially outsourcing them.

And thanks, I have friends from my home town who are planning to do the same thing, so I won't be doing it alone.

I don't know why mine is like that when I'm logged out, this is weird. Although on that note, I've been using UESP at 75% zoom on Chrome for like 5+ years. Default size is so weird to me.

That's interesting, learn something everyday. Question: I have a acquaintance/friend who vacationed in Ireland about a year ago (she loved it, didn't want to come home) and she said it's fairly common for folks to stay with their parents for a long time. I can't remember specifically what she said but from what I remember she was saying that it's no big deal to be in your mid 30s and living with the parents. Is this accurate?

This is the reason I made the list in the first place.

I just managed to sift salt onto my doughnut rather than sugar, by mistake. Salty doughnuts really aren't very nice.

Like I said, it was a mistake! Someone decided to leave salt in a sifter right near the doughnuts (who the heck does that?), and someone else told me that I should put powdered sugar on my doughnut. I naturally assumed that the salt was sugar (admittedly weird sugar, but sugar all the same) and put it on. Not my fault.

Sounds like those two someones were working together to achieve the resulting 'salty doughnut' prank, if you ask me.

One of my friends once coated his chips in sugar while everyone just watched in shock, unable to say anything. My most fun story of a mishap at a restaurant was the time I accidentally put "Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel on 6 times in a row.

Your friend is right. It's extremely common for young adults (so 18-25, i.e me and all my friends, we're all between 20 and 24) to the point where all my friends who are in our early 20s still live at home. But it's by no means uncommon for people older than that. A survey last year found that about 20% of people between 25 and 34 live with their parents. And a different survey a few years back that it's 40% between 18 and 29.

Part of it's possibly a cultural legacy, there was this World War 2 thing back in the 40s you might have heard about, it lead to a baby boom in US & UK. Ireland didn't take part in World World 2 so that didn't really happen and as such, neither did government policy to encourage home ownership among young couples which included veterans like in the USA or the Social Democratic measures of Clement Atlee in the UK which in turn lead to the commonality of home ownership for young people. So maybe it bring less of a sense of shame for Irish people than elsewhere because of that, I don't know, that's something which would warrant an actual academic study (and a worthwhile one.) But honestly, it's mostly for financial reasons and the fact that everyone else is in the same boat. Since 2008 it's been the worst financial crisis since the depression. People my age do want to move out (or at least, those I know do) but because of unemployment, low wages and high cost of renting in cities, it's oftentimes just not possible.

I actually read a pretty interesting article a while back talking about housing practices throughout history.

When your mother accidently adds soy sauce to her green barley tea instead of sugar.. And then wonders why it tastes so bad and had to confess her mistake to the waitress

True story

@Aarah: The thought has crossed my mind. I'll have to be more careful of surprise offers of homemade doughnuts in the future.

This actually made me laugh out loud. I can just imagine being in the restaurant as it plays again, and again, and again...

B-but how? How is it even possible to mistake soy sauce for sugar?

One time I drank vinegar, thinking it was water. That was fun.

Soy sauce for sugar? Vinegar for water? Bleugh! (Yeah, the first one is strange).

The other month my mum put what she thought was a mint in her mouth, and proceeded to pull a face upon discovering that it was a sugar cube.
Admittedly, that one is not as dissimilar in taste to the others.

Have you seen my family. No, wait, let me rephrase that. DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU'RE TALKING TO RIGHT NOW?

I rest my case

And why are you resting your case? Is it tired after holding your belongings?

@Beta: Are you saying that there is something wrong with a bit of strange? :wat:

My family is weird in a different way (on top of the automatic strangeness we get from having a parent who's in a band).

@Cass: No, there isn't. But I'm not one to reckon a bit of strangeness runs in the genes.. (No, I reckon it's a whole lot more)

I just woke up from a strange dream...two small, golden frogs had entered through my window uninvited and proceeded to brazenly produce large amounts of fecal matter (in relation to their size) all over my place.

Why can't I ever dream anything normal.

Sounds like your subconscious is trying to tell you to get your [&@%!] together :wat: That, or secretly you have some unresolved issues with frogs

I played a prank on my brother today, and I feel like a genius. Replacing his Minecraft shortcut with a Shut-Down shortcut was indeed the best idea ever (I changed the icon and name)! He just looked at the icon and clicked it, and the computer shut down. I should have had done this on 1st April, but, no worries.

Ah, yes, I see. This means that a tall, blond stranger will soon enter your life and present you with a seemingly lucrative business proposal, which you will be on the verge of accepting when the whole thing will be revealed as a scam by the stranger's good twin brother, who himself will later be revealed to be the actual evil twin who just thwarted you from investing in a venture that would have made you a multi-billionaire.

...Or maybe it just means you have really weird dreams.
