I don't think I say brilliant very often, mind, and I only say Mate when someone has annoyed me when I'm driving, I.e. "Don't indicate then, mate!"
I do know people who say mate a lot though - it's usually blokes.

As a british bloke, I can confirm that none of us use it on a daily basis. That said, I am in the south and it could be a northern thing. Those northerners doing noorth things. Who do they think they are? *drinks tea and judges silently*

There are those people that go, "Hey, mate, maate. Ahh, no worries, mate. Mate, I'm just joking" etc.
