Silence of the Lambs is great and also isn't scary at all.

You can trust me on that, I hate horror films.

---

Letting Youtube's algorithms pick my music for the day has also been a weird experience. I started with alae, went through some more indie-Y folk-Y songs, listened to a number of Lumineers songs on repeat for a while, then all of a sudden ended up on Milky Chance for a handful of songs before jumping across to an hour of Ed Sheeran and now I'm somehow on this Shawn Mendes thrash.

The fact that this has also been the most exciting thing about my day should also hopefully help get across how truly dull it has been.

We seem to have chosen the wrong date for our "spring cookout": it is currently snowing.

Or it's an unplanned L.A.R.P(Is that the way to do it? Or just Larp(live action Roleplaying)) and set in Skyrim. ;) Though, if you are the dragonborn, you should consider buying arms and armour in case of pesky dragon attacks.

I wonder if that's like the thing where you can get to Hitler's Wikipedia article no matter what other article you start from. As in, starting from any song, no matter how obscure, and after some number of iterations you end up getting to super mainstream pop.

I feel you. We had green grass and chirping birds, and it's now looking like late December once again.

I've had two people tell me that it's the scariest movie that they've ever seen. But I guess you've given me some hope.

If I suddenly stop posting on the forums, I probably died of fright. Blame it on Velvet.

My hatred for you shines brighter than the sun. That being said my triggers are typically WW2 documentaries and anytime trade agreements are mentioned on the news.

We need more trigger warnings here, and more Homestuck references

And more Civ 6.. Just, so much more Civ

What we need is for someone to deal with that Morrowind topic in the general part of the forums. I mean, am I the only one who's bothered by that? Is it here for a reason? Surely it can be moved.

Boring post incoming:

Dirty Spaceman wrote:

I imagine it's probably like that.

What I'd hypothesis happens is that on the basis of your first choice you're placed in a cluster (/group, whatever) with others who also searched for the same song. The revealed preferences of those people (based on their search patterns) are then used to predict what song you would like to hear next. If people in your cluster tend to prefer more mainstream songs on average than your current than the suggested song will be more mainstream on average. Because songs are less-mainstream exactly because fewer people are aware of them, and listen to them, you will get this almost every time. The trend here is probably non-linear insofar as you grow closer to mainstream pop in your preferences, the distance between your own cluster and the most mainstream cluster closes at a faster rate (basically what happened on my first and second iteration of this).

It can't get more sophisticated without running an analysis of the song itself which it probably can't do cheaply.

A more interesting experiment you can do with google's adsense bot though. Those ads will link you to increasingly more fringe political sites as you continue to click through on them. The basic reason is that the bot identified that people are more likely to click if the political ad is more shocking.

Sum of this post, algorithms are interesting. Since they're likely to increasingly determine the course of our lives, we should pay more attention to them than we currently are.

I think I've broken it. Or rather made it work properly because I started with Ramshackle Glory and for the last hour it's just been recommending music from bands the lead singer was in and his solo work. It was far less exciting than I was hoping it would be.

But yeah I think algorithms are very interesting, especially how they can perpetuate the same discriminatory behaviors and biases as the people/societies that make them.

You say movies don't scare you but I'm pretty sure you watched The Terminator as a child and have been terrified of robots even since. Because every time A.I comes up you start talking about how Skynet is going to kill us all. It must have scared you more than Darby of Gill and The Little People scared me. Which let me tell you as a child who lives in the Irish countryside was quite a lot.

I just checked the post I made outside General and wow. That was a name I didn't expect to see.

The realization just hit me: Why is there a package of Twix sitting in my refrigerator?

The fact that the Twix mysteriously appeared in my home isn't the issue-- that's just magic gnomes at work. The question is, why the fridge?

No, the real question is are you going to eat the mysterious food that just appeared in your house? Because eating magic food is like a one way ticket to the Otherworld.

Is "yous" as a plural of you just an Irish thing? Because I use it, Velvet uses it, most people I know use it. And you know it's a good word, makes sense, should keep using it. But do yous use yous?

My grandma says "yous". Nobody else I know does, though.
