I'm going to form a VHS collectors rights group for folks who want to keep VHS's alive w/o ridicule or judgement.

*judges you with ridicule for what you just said*

Re: General Discussion

Rock on, my man. 8)

My brother has a massive collection of VHS tapes - probably, like, a thousand. It's ridiculous. Then he tells me I need a VCR at my house... Meanwhile I encounter individuals on a daily basis who don't know what a VCR even is. Siiiigh.

Also, not disappointed Dark Spark, 10/10.

Hey beta, what did the 5 fingers say to the face?

@avron next time you see your bro high five him for me. While I think that's too many to own it's always great to have friends like this, it allows me to have things in a roundabout way w/o violating my principles: I'm very much a minimalist and try to own as few things as possible. My place resembles a barracks more than a lived in home and I love it. But when you have friends that collect stuff like this you get to have your cake and eat it too. I have a buddy who collects comics and it works out great.

Also I just plain miss vhs! I think of sitting indian style on tacky brownish carpet and snacking on fun dip while watching a movie on a wood cabinet style tv. That's back before Stallone single handedly took down the USSR.

Hey beta, what did the 5 fingers say to the face?

Sorry? What was that. Cant hear ya from literally on the other side of the country

Btw, I still have my VHS copies of my childhood favorites ime Jurassic Park n Nightmare Before Christmas

Re: General Discussion

Fri Sep 14, 2018 7:44 pm

Sorry, pal. No judgement or ridicule for being a fan, but disc form is favoured in my world.
That clunky rewind and fastforward noise of a strip of film being swiftly rolled through a pair of wheels; that annoyance of finding out that the tape hasn't been rewound when you press play; that frustration of pulling out the tape from the VCR and then the whole length of tangled film comes out behind it.
No no.

Plus...you can't use an old vhs tape as a coaster...

Re: General Discussion

Sat Sep 15, 2018 1:22 pm

I'm not against any format I just wanna keep my old ones. That being said DVD's aren't flawless, they don't age as well. 2 of my best dvds (Fight Club & Lawrence of Arabia) don't work anymore they just sit in my collection so I can say I own it.

And it's not 100% about the format it's about the 'media acquisition process.' I'm a huge fanboy of flea markets and one fun thing to do is to go to one with $20-40ish and find out what I'll come out with.

I'm also into collecting music. I wanted to do the whole vinyl thing but that's on hold for now. Just building up the CD collection.

Re: General Discussion

Good taste, leroy. Lawrence of Arabia is one of my favorite movies of all time. I was driving to the store a few months ago and the theme song came on and I couldn't leave the car until it was done. All the feels. Actually, I was in an antique bookstore and found the 1st edition of Lawrence's "Revolt In the Desert"...needless to say it is now on my bookshelf. Super cool find. :D

Aarah wrote:Plus...you can't use an old vhs tape as a coaster...

You youngins and using weird objects for coasters... :wat: My brother uses books for coasters and refuses to let me buy him real ones because he's a "minimalist" but the books -- !!

Hmmm, now I'm curious as to what kind of things UESPers collect.

Re: General Discussion

Sat Sep 15, 2018 5:33 pm

I don't use coasters because that's how I roll. I like to live...dangerously.

Re: General Discussion

Sat Sep 15, 2018 6:10 pm

@Avron
I don't actually use discs as coasters, but I appreciate the fact that you can if you want to. I use coasters as coasters. Square glass ones with small frosted butterflies on.
Also, I am no youngun.

@Dovah
I'm not sure if watermarks on your wooden furniture counts as living dangerously. If it does...maybe time to spice up your life a bit. :P

Edit: Oh dear. Now I'm singing "Spice up your life". Darn Spice Girls and their memorable songs.

Re: General Discussion

Sat Sep 15, 2018 7:56 pm

I am a badass, Aarah. You don't know what it is like to live dangerously until you've took part in Street Countdown, forgo the use of coasters, use shrapnel to pay a £1 at a self service machine. The new and Improved Sheodovah is such a badass, guys. I may actually marry myself then cheat on myself, that's how dangerous i am living.

Re: General Discussion

Something I've randomly thought of: I don't have relationship/girl issues, I have me being a broken human/weirdo issue. Sounds mellow dramatic I know but given recent events I find myself saying the 'it's not you it's me' thing a la george costanza.

Also I just have an issue with humans in general. I was always weird socially but was aware of it and put myself in social situations to improve my social skills. Being in my 30s I've developed confidence and wit (in that order) but I feel like my personality is a computer program more than a genuine expression of oneself.

Friend of mine is leaving soon and she [&@%!] my brain up by pointing out how [&@%!] up my city is.

EDIT: In other news sloppy joes really are amazing. I love dirt cheap comfort food. That being said this reminds me of a UK video I watched where they cooked 'what every american loves to eat when they watch football' and it was sloppy joes. I seriously don't think I've ever seen sloppy joes served at any football venue ever. The hot dog has gotta be the most served item at any given american sporting event.

I need to get new knives. Either years of poor living(in terms of habits) have rendered my muscles obselete thus carrots are like fighting a Drauger Deathlord with a spoon or the knives are blunter then an englishman telling cold tea to sod off. I mean, I tried to cut a swede yesterday and it would not do it. It felt like it would snap the knife if i tried harder.

Re: General Discussion

Tue Sep 18, 2018 7:46 am

If you got decent knives, it wouldnt be bad to invest into a proper sharpening kit, that is if your confident enough with it*. If not, you can always look into services that will do it for you or a relative/friend

*I find myself in the opposite issue. I've got a good record of never cutting myself with blades I'm handling but I no longer possess the means to sharpen em in a way that wont damage the edge

Re: General Discussion

Thu Sep 20, 2018 6:29 am

I don't need no freaking kniiiiiifeeee!

Actually, I do but I don't trust myself to not cut myself when sharpening. For the cost of a knife, it's best to get a new knife. Then I can play knifey spoony. I don't cut myself with knives. Instead I cut myself on coffee jars!

The foil tab sliced my middle finger. Wasn't deep, stung like a motherbucker on a ruddy bee hunt.

Or *gasps* The coffee is self aware and I have started our downfall by [&@%!] off the King of the coffees! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! WE ARE ALL GONNA TO DIE! AMARGEDDON IS UPON US!

This reminds me that I've got my hunting knife buried somewhere underneath my stuff...

Kinda not this thread, but I don't want to triple-necro-post. I'm enough of an n'wah to hijack this one though. So, I've got another poem done after quite a break.

Spoiler:
Unity

For the ruthless flow of time
The remedy is none,
Separate cracks piece most sublime
But stands strong reinforced as one.

Till death and beyond,
Against entropy love goes
Forming unbreakable bond,
In unity which we chose.

Leaving our bodies bygone
And weakened by countless scars,
We shall live on,
In a dance of entangled stars.

I'm a hard case of random item hoarder with an evergrowing appetite for more clutter in my flat. I blame Morrowind for this - collecting and re-arrangnig items in all my player houses. I always have a shrine to Lord Brinne for some reason...

Cassandra wrote:@Snehk: Nice poem, as always! I wish I had your skill.

I don't think that I'm really skilled, I just make up for it with knowledge put into those poems. I started writing poetry half a year ago or so, I've been writing mostly prose for about four years, but I always enjoyed writing poetry more.

Could someone bump this thread in foreseeable future? Because I think that my Muse is back and I don't want to litter this thread with poems after this one...

Spoiler:
Sky-field of roses

Looking at the vault of heaven
This cold and stern morning,
I saw racers of the skies
Dragging clouds on the heights,
Up they soared with Jove’s blessing,
Leaving curls by chariots riven.

Looking at the vault of heaven
This dark and brooding evening,
I saw painters with their brushes
Giving skies thousands of blushes,
Faded strokes of last light painting,
Into blackness shortly driven.

Looking at the vault of heaven
This starry, ink black night,
I saw star-maker that reposes
Within countless lucent roses,
With my love in its sight,
All of them to you given

I don't think anyone would mind if you littered any thread with your beautiful poems, but I will bump that thread for you to help you out. ;)

How dare you call me sentient. I worked damn hard to not have to do anything, at all, ever..

And now you're trying to make me be aware? I've been enjoying my 6 year hibernation, and you've gone and woken me up!
