The other day, an idea just hit me: How good would a Harry Potter RPG set in Hogwarts be?

By RPG I mean a game like Oblivion. Obviously, I couldn't make one, so, following an idea proposed to me by Virtual Weasel, who is one of the DM's along with our resident collie Matt and me, I'm making it into an RP.

You would make a character and choose gender, age, height, weight, blood status, your wand, hair colour, you could choose an owl, cat or a toad, you could change your eye colour and you would have skills to choose, like in Oblivion. Once you receive your letter, you would RP your character going to Diagon Alley, where you would buy potions ingredients, books and other magical stuff. I will then ask you a list of questions like: "A man is lying, injured, on the floor. What would you do? Laugh at him, help him by dragging him over to an adult, walk by or try and do First-Aid?" If you picked the first one, then you are more likely to be in Slytherin, but if you chose the walk by option then you would more likely be sorted into Hufflepuff.

You would go to classes, do errands, eat, sleep and pull pranks. By doing jobs you would earn money, which you can spend at Diagon Alley during the holidays. You could by a broomstick, potions, invisibility cloak and new spells. As it is set after the events of the Second Wizarding War, some areas are out of bounds due to damage caused by the Battle of Hogwarts, so, if you are caught there, you will lose points, which can damage the chances of your house winning the Cup, which would then lower the amount of points you can use to upgrade your skills.

You can duel other players, with their permission, and I will decide who wins, based on your stats. If you are caught duelling then you will be punished. The punishments range between a 1-100 point drop, a night in the forest or a week of detentions. All of these will lower some of your skills. At the end of each year, a disaster or an event happens. The event could be a rogue wizard trying resurrect a certain somebody or the Tri-Wizard tournament.

When the year finishes, the fun doesn't end. You can still RP you going to the Quidditch World Cup, Diagon Alley or something more sinister. At the end of the year, exams are taken and, based on performance, you can be given a skill boost.

At the start you are given 175 skill points to space out between all of them skills. If you have an abysmal amount of points for one of your skills, then you can't say that you're the top of the class, and if you attempt to use a spell in that category when you're fighting then it's more likely to fail or not do a lot of damage.

Only the DM's can control teachers.

The classes are: Muggle Studies, Runes, Divination, Charms, Care of Magical Creatures, DADA, Herbology, Arithmetic, Transfiguration and Potions. In 1st and 2nd year you can not have Divination, Muggle Studies, Runes, Arithmetic or CMC. You can apparate, providing you have pasted your test in year 6. You may also get splinched.

I'll begin, but we DM's need to decide stuff.

A plot will be added after the first year. As it is set after the events of the last book, some areas are out of bounds, and you will be punished if you are caught there. Unless you start late, you are not at Hogwarts straight away. You still have to buy your books and stuff, and then you need to board the train.

You will not be awarded insane amounts of gold for errands, only 1 galleon maximum. The currency is in Knuts, Sickles and Galleons. Research them. I will control the shopkeepers, so I basically control the prices.

SIMPLE RULES:

It goes without saying, you can't control other characters. Leave that to the DM's.

You can't even say this: "Bob held out his hand, which Jim accepted and shook." Instead say this: "Bob held out his hand, inviting his friend Jim to shake it."

This is exceptionally prevalent in battles and duels. You can't even kill NPC's - who are people not controlled by anyone. You should say this: "Bob cast a stunning spell, which he directed at Jim." Me or another DM'll then write: "The offensive spell, trailing red light, struck Jim in the shoulder."

The House that you join is ultimately your choice, however, I will send each and everyone of you guys - and girls - a few questions which you will have to answer, which could affect what House you are in. Don't worry, these are morality questions, like this: "A man is lying, injured, on the floor. What would you do? I don't know how to start this, but here goes nothing:

Aidan, still groggy from lack of sleep, woke up. His face was sticky, streaked with sweat and dirt. It was odd that he was still lying, tired and worn out, on his bed; he was normally up in a shot and ready, but today was different. Yesterday, much to Aidan's surprise and the dismay of his parents, he had received a small, brown envelope, emblazoned with the coat of arms of Hogwarts, a wizarding school, famed for the aptitude of it's teachers and, more worryingly, it's disaster rate.

At first, his parents had been shocked and told him firmly that he would not be attending the school, however, his dad eventually came round to the idea, after he his fears had been assuaged in the letter. When Aidan had questioned why his father, who was a tall, strong man called John, had originally not allowed him to go, he uncovered, shockingly, that he had lost an uncle in one of the fights that took place there.

His mother, who usually never cared about his social, educational or physical aspects of his life, hoped that this discovery would scare off Aidan from joining, however, he felt excited and intrigued by this news. This would be a change from his normally dreary and boring life. He was a wizard!

Quinn was eating dinner when the news arrived. His parents had been waiting his entire life for this invite to Hogwarts -- which is why they threw him a party with their high-class Wizard friends.

Quinn's mother was a muggle, a famous news reporter named Elizabeth. Quinn's father was a power Animagus and Wizard, Vincent Mafreshak.

"Your grades will be high, or else." said Hannibal's father, Napoleon Roi, a member of the French Senate. A letter had just been recieved from Hogwarts - where Napoleon had spent his years learning the ways of magic.

"I understand, Father." Hannibal repleid.

"You will not get in any form of trouble whatsoever."

Hannibal rolled his eyes. He did not intend to follow those instructions. "I understand, Father."

"I want to hear nothing negative from your professors. You have been warned, my son."

Hannibal nodded. "I understand, Father."

Good! Good! These are a great start!

The Roi family was famous throughout France. Napoleon had been a French politician since he graduated from Hogwarts, and his wife, Cecilia, was a relatively famous English actress. Both were pure blooded wizards.

Hannibal was the firstborn child of Napoleon and Cecilia Roi. He had a younger sister who was only two years old, yet he still considered himself an only.

Both Napoleon and Cecilia were highly strict. They would reward their son with massive loads of money and valuables when he did good, but he would be grounded for entire months when he did bad. Despite this, Hannibal continued to do what he pleased around school, using his family's status as one of the wealthiest houses in Paris as protection.

Napoleon was a large fellow with a broad, powerful build. He always wore the most expensive of suits and coats and hid his wand in the most clever of places. "We will buy your wand, you books," Napoleon explained to his son. "And you will need an owl."

"An owl?" Hannibal asked. "Like the one you had when I was young?"

Napoleon nodded.

That's good character development, but your person will get a shock when he comes to Hogwarts.

"Now listen Quinny." Elizabeth said softly. Quinn flinched when she called her 'Quinny'. "You'll use your powers responsibly, right?"

Quinn nodded.

"You'll only use them when your teachers ask you too, right?"

Quinn nodded again.

"And when you graduate, you'll only use your powers in self defense, right?" Elizabeth forbade magic in the Mafreshak household. Unlike many wizards, Vincent did not enchant anything in the house. To Elizabeth's knowledge, he never used magic... but of course when she was away, he'd use magic constantly, transform into his chosen animal, the wolf, and explore the forest, and teach Quinn how to become an Animagus. He still hadn't perfected the talent, however. Far from it.

Quinn nodded vaguely, sure he would break that promise. Elizabeth knew it too, she just wanted to hear him say it.

"We're not rich, but I'll be able to buy whatever you want in Diagon Alley." Vincent said. Vincent was half right -- Elizabeth brought in more Muggle money than Vincent brought in Wizard money. "You're getting a cat. It's a fine thing. I've already browsed the selection, reserved it, and I've cast a spell on it that will make it more intelligent." He said.
