I haven't played Daggerfall yet, and don't even know what Unity is, so I'm planning on going with DOS when I do play it-- which will probably be sooner rather than later. :)

I've been getting back into Arena, but I keep starting over with different characters because I can't seem to make up my mind which race and class I want to play with!

I wouldn't worry about not having any experience with playing tabletop RPGs; you don't really need it.

Um...good luck?

I've only ever played it on DOS, and really just so I could get the bug fix.

You don't have to add mods to Unity to enjoy it. I personally prefer the Unity version just because I could never get the original one to control the way I wanted it to and the opening cutscene always stuttered horrifically no matter how many times I restarted it.

I definitely agree with this, although using the built-in QOL stuff is definitely recommended. Daggerfall Unity is the way to go for new players.

Also the original poster was a spambot, I think he pulled this post from another TES forum... it's really surprisingly ingenious.

Throwing in my two cents here, recently I tried out the latest DFUnitty build and while it has some awesome QOL improvements, not to mention high-res graphics and smooth engine, it is still not 100% faithful to the original game and does not play like vanilla Daggerfall to me.

There is hoping that at some point in the future the playing mechanics will be all accurately recreated thanks to reverse-engineering, but at present DFUnity is not the same thing as Daggerfall. It does allow for very cool mods and to me, this is the main selling point for it right now.

As for your problems with sound stuttering, this is most likely to do with DOSBox configuration not having been optimized. Current DOSBox builds are very capable of rather smoothly running the game on even older hardware with minimum tinkering, just don't go for overkill settings tat are suggested by some people (e.g. there seems to reasonable need for using 63 MiB of RAM, or 20 MiB of RAM for item/texture cache).
