So I got the bright idea to download Daggerfall and play it via Dosbox. I haven't tried to use Doxbox since the Windows 10 upgrade - maybe I'm missing something, but I can't get some of it to work right. I can open the game, but I can't get a good memory size.

I want to change the memory size, like it says in step 3 of the Daggerfall instructions, but you can't do it the instructed way anymore. When you open Doxbox Options it just opens up Doxbox. There's no way to change the config file, as instructed. If you go directly to the config file's location, (now buried in "Appdata," which I only found out through a lot of Googling) there's no way to open and change it.

Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong here?

I wouldn't try to setup Daggerfall manually. Please consider using the Daggerfall Installer, which will configure DOSBox for you, and includes some built in fixes for the game.

Yikes. It's been a while since I've actually looked at these tutorials.

I've run DOSBox under Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 and I've never had any problems opening the options file or changing it, so I'm gonna run you through a few standard tech support questions:

  1. Have you tried running your Start Menu shortcut as an administrator? (Right Click->Run as administrator) I've had to do this before under Windows 7.
  2. After locating your config file in your AppData/Local folder, did you try right-clicking and clicking "Edit" or:
    • Edit with <program> (Notepad++, Vim, Emacs, etcetera)
    • Open With->Choose Default Program

Another option is to edit your configuration while DOSBox is running. This is a pain in the butt to do by hand, but you can use a text editor (Mined is a decent text editor currently available for DOS, but you can do it with Notepad) to write a batch file that will let you configure DOSBox from within DOSBox. For example, if you put this in your DOSBox C drive:

DFCONFIG.BAT:
Code:
config memsize=32
config cycles=max
config core=dynamic

You can run that every time you want to play Daggerfall, or run it once and then use config - writeconf to write the current configuration.

Fantastic, I had no idea that existed. Thanks!

Crawldragon, Dosbox doesn't seem to work with Windows 10 the way it did with previous versions - I never had any problems with it in the past, but I hadn't tried to use it since the update. Luckily, the Daggerfall installer seems to have done the trick. Thanks, though!
