I accepted a Mages Guild quest and I think it is this one: An Ancient Scroll. However, the item I found in the dungeon was actually a Small Sack which I cannot USE nor can I return it to the quest giver.

Any thoughts?

I remember doing this quest a long time ago and couldn't figure it out then either.

Afaik, a sack shouldnt be an obtainable item...

Try reloading a save you made after obtaining the quest, but before fast traveling to the dungeon, maybe that will fix it.

I did try to FIXSAVE and go back into the dungeon, using cheatmode to flip through the primary areas, but since I'd already picked up the scroll there was nothing to be found. It's not the only quest I've been working on and unfortunately I didn't structure the saves around it to be able to go around it.

This is the SECOND time I've seen this exact problem whereby the scroll shows up as a sack and the quest text says "The Mages Guild of The Mages Guild has asked me..."

Not sure, u using the daggerfall setup version with all the patches?

Well it's kind of crazy but the time limit just expired on the quest and it said I completed it the moment that it did! A "tanto" (the reward) came out of nowhere along with dialog to say that I had done well.
