Have been really enjoying Daggerfall using the cheat to get back to dungeon exits (playing it ages ago i had to give up games after being unable to find my way back to the exit).

Now the only dull part of the game is running about between buildings in towns (especially Daggerfall itself as the biggest). Is there any cheat/ patch to let you move instantly to quest buildings, the way the Alt-F11 cheat for dungeons does?

Or would there be any way to bring up a list of guilds, shops and quest location buildings to chosee and go into one instantly, the way there is in Mount and Blade?

Nope.

I generally use a small town as my home base, for precisely this reason. Plus to avoid messing up the main questline by accident. Plus Lysandus' ghost is annoying.

There's a good tip from Bethesda on towns:
Quote:
BUILDING YOUR SKILLS: TIP 1
Never do anything normal in Daggerfall, because it doesn't build any skills. Daggerfall is designed so that when you use a skill more often, the better you get at it. Even simple things like exploring a town and dungeon can become training grounds. When in a town, always run around. This builds your running skill. When in a dungeon, sneak around since this builds your stealth skill. [source]

I also think there's some fun in asking people for directions. When I first played the game (the Betony demo to be exact), I quickly discovered that repeatedly asking a townsperson about a certain place will eventually result in that person marking the desired location on your map. However this is no fun at all and removes some role playing depth from the game. So I started asking multiple folks that get along: you ask a person, follow the direction they tell you for a while, then ask around some more. This also helps train the Streetwise skill a bit if you choose to talk in the blunt tone.

How do you sneak? Can't see any sneak button listed in controls. Do you crouch and then walk?

Had already been doing the running in towns to build running skill ( i always make it a minor skill so it helps level faster) and had found out the ask repeatedly to get location marked on map bit - though i find that improves the game. I wish it had a key to bring up a list of guilds/shops/quest buildings to go to like Mount and Blade does as running around big cities like Daggerfall itself can take ages.

Don't do this. Yes, you'll level faster, but unless you manage to increase all your combat skills at the same rate you will find the game increasingly harder rather than easier as you level up.

This is because a lot of enemies scale up based on your level. If you, for example, took Jumping and Running as two skills that help level you up, then you will be weak compared to a character that took eg Long Blade and Critical Strike at any level.

When the game first came out, some of my friends tried various methods to get to high levels as quickly as they could. And discovered that they simply got killed far too easily.

I see your point, but my two of my three primary and major skills are combat skills, another two are magical, and it's my minor skills that are non-magical.

It's not that hard to get enough money for good equipment early on either, if you go to the mage guild and reload on 'get quest' until you get a quest to guard a mage or valuable for the night. You have to loiter about till after midnight usually, then kill three thieves or nightblades, who have a high attack but low armour, so if you hit them fast with a good weapon (e.g elven dai-katana or wakizashi) while backing off to avoid some of their attacks, you can kill all three. With the money from the loot from the first three you can buy a wagon for 400 gold or so. Then repeat till you have enough to buy even better weapons and armour (e.g dwarven dai katana or wakizasha and a kite shield) - or use some of the stuff they drop if it's good enough.

On top of that if the quest was to guard a mage his messenger gives you a magical item within a few hours if you loiter.

If it was to guard a valuable item then you have to loiter till after 3 am before going back to the guy who gives quests.

With the armour and weapons you get from this dungeons become doable even if they have tough creatures (provided you back off while attacking when fighting anything at all tough in melee - and save frequently).

oh also p.s i've met and been killed by lichs and vampire ancients at level 2 or 3 in some dungeons, so i don't think it's down to level - there is just a random chance of meeting something really deadly at any level.

No, sneak and crouch are different actions. I'm not sure, maybe it's called something else on the remap keys screen, but it's definitely remapable. Also it might be one of the keys that can only be remapped when the mouse look is turned on in the mouse menu.

Yes, the game does spawn high-level monsters early in the game, whether because of a bug or an intention of the developers. However, non-human monsters are always of the same level, but human enemy characters will level up and get considerably stronger to match the player character's level.

Yeah you're right on both of those - my stealth skill has been going up without me doing anything at all except walk and attack.

And i did notice when going back to Privateer's hold with a level 10 character that although there were still some bats and rats there were now giants and centaurs along with them. I didn't have much trouble with them, but i think you may still be right that it's not the best plan to level by getting non-combat and non-magical skills up as i think there's a skill % cap of 249 or something? Maybe i've got that wrong though
