The manual says you cant climb down without rope. That's the only place I have ever even seen mention of rope. Does such a thing even really exist in Dagerrfall? If so where!?!

It doesn't exist to my knowledge, although climbing down objects is extremely hard.

Nope, no rope. Climbing down is very hard, if not impossible.
I use levitate.

I thought so, but If there is no rope, just how DO you climb down? I ask for future reference when playing a strictly non-magical character.

It works the same way climbing normally would, it's just MUCH harder.

that doesn't really tell me much, as far as I can tell, if I stop pushing forward I fall.

From memory, if I recall, What you have to do is tilt your view downwards while climbing a wall with the keyboard control.

I don't think I've ever managed to 'climb' down...fall down, yes, but every time I tried to climb, I fall. Hence using levitate (or slowfall).
It might not be possible, it wouldn't be the first time for a game to lack certain features that the manual mentions.

I've given up on going down in Daggerfall, especially after I got and cured lycanthropy and am stuck with 10 HP.

Well the main thing I would be using it for is climbing city walls. I have resorted to just jumping off the other side. It hurts but not that much. As it is I am playing a magic user right now but I plan on playing a thief next with absolutely no magic. the city walls are not an issue but shafts like you find in Theodyricks laboratory are impossible ( I tried jumping once and died). That said, this makes playing a thief really difficult. I wonder if it can be patched?

I haven't found places unreachable by foot in dungeons in my gameplays, only those accessed by red brick doors. Be sure to check out all secret passages you can find and to explore every room.

Theodyrick's laboratory has a deep shaft in the entrance, whitch is the only path to the rest of the dungeon. There are several other dungeons that have this starting room as well.

Additonally, there are a few parts of the main quest eg when visiting a certain undead necromancer, where levitating (or using a recall spell) will be pretty useful/essential to get out of his domain!

If you mean KOW you don't need neither levitation nor recall spell. You can simply start climbing the north wall: I don't think this will be a problem for Rickel, because one of the Thief class skill is climbing.

Precisely, I mean to stay in character, and a thief (or Altier type assassin) should not have any magic in my opinion. Going up is not a problem,it's the going down that I have an issue with.

I think that rope is an item removed during development of the game, but they forgot to edit the manual.
If you don't want to use magic, then your only choice is to use items enchanted with either a slow fall or a levitation spell.

So, basically, it's there because of the same reason Arena was named as such; laziness.

Yep, that sounds about right. I discovered while playing my magic-user that the crypts of the necromancers at scourge barrow are impossible the get out of by mundane means, due to the inverted funnel design of the coffin entrance. I have thusly concluded that purely mundane characters in Daggerfall, SUCK. How does one even acquire enchanted items without joining the mages guild and rising in rank, or getting lucky with loot? Daggerfall really looks like it was made for the magic user , and to Oblivion with everyone else.

As reported on this page http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Morgiah%27s_Wedding, the north wall of the passage is climbable. I tried it myself with my Knight character and it worked.

Magic is only useful if you wish to explore the area beneath the coffin in front of the entrance, for it hasn't any wall nearby.

On the rest you're quite right. Chance of getting enchanted items are fairly low (at least for me). Furthermore, you have to do a lot of quest to locate covens to summon daedric princes. Another thing I dislike about Daggerfall is that you have to be in a temple to buy potions, otherwise you're depending on loots.

Very helpful, thank you. I think I will play my mundane character after all. Yes the bit about potions is annoying as I am always an atheist unless I play a cleric, which I rarely do. I am playing a custom sorcereress so that's a real bummer.

Actually the "Jumping" skill reduces the fall damage. I am playing without magic at all (only potions which I am able to find from loot). Of course it is possible to stuck somewhere of nowhere in a dungeon, but if you climb up few times over of falling down you are also decreases total damage.

I'm playing a character, who cannot use magic at all. But I see no problem with item enchantment. Just join School of Julianos and raise your rank by improving Short Blade and Lockpicking skills for example.
Also, you can use potions by joining Dark Brotherhood and raising your rank there.
