Repair Item Crash

Tue Dec 23, 2014 4:41 am

I'm playing Daggerfall from the Antology in my laptop with Windows 8.1.
My ebony dagger broke, so I went with a weaponsmith to repair it. However, everytime I try to save after that, the game crashes. First I thought that broken items couldn't be repaired, but I tried with an useless dwarven tanto and happened the same. I already installed the newest patch and DOS32A. I tried to use Daghex2f and DFITEM, but my computer tells me they're too old. I have read and looked for similar bugs, but I haven't found anything. Why's that?

I seem to remember this was a known bug when the game first came out, but it was fixed fairly early in the patch process.

There are two things to try, if you haven't already done so:

1) patch your game to version 213 - you say in your post that you've done this, but check the version number as it loads.
2) run Fixsave on your saved game.

See "www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Files" for these.

If these don't help, then simply abandon the dagger. It's not very important, in the long run.

I see I haven't really patched. I try to run dag213 and Fixsave, but since the programs are too old, it seems my computer won't let me. And the problem is not the dagger, the problem is that I can't buy weapons every time they break.

You'll need to run those programs from within DOSBox. Windows 8 sucks at 16bit programs. Windows 8 sucks period.

OK, I tried to run dag213.exe with DOSBox, but it tells me:
"unppacking c:\\fixsave.exe
unppacking c:\\fixmaps.exe
DOS: Error creating file:"

In the Status Windows it says:
"Warning: file creation failed: C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\daggerfall\DF\DAGGER\FIXMAPS.EXE"

And when I try tu ron FixSave, it says:
"Please insert your Daggerfall CD into the CD-ROM drive.
Press any key when you are ready."
even if the CD is already in the drive.

The most likely cause for the errors you get when the patch tries to change or add files is that you have installed DOSBox and/or the game into the "Program Files(x86)" folder, and are running a modern version of Windows without administrator permissions.

Here's a good FAQ on how to set up DOSBox on Windows 7 and 8 to avoid this kind of errors:
http://dosgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13511

Basically, you should install DOSBox anywhere outside "Program Files(x86)", preferably on a disk/partition which is not the same as your system disk. You can simply copy all the files from your DOSBox default installation into a different folder, DOSBox does not use anything from the system registry so you don't have to use an installer every time.
