I don't know about the admins/moderators, but; does anyone think a roleplaying board would be a good addition to the Forums? I mean, I don't think you can't lose anything from adding such asides from some some spare time. Personally I'm surprised nobody's really said anything about any possible board editions here. Now, I'm not sure if this is the proper place to discuss this, but this'll have to do unless a moderator or admin move the thread since there's no suggestion board. The poll is for gathering insights on what others think of the idea.

What's a roleplaying board?

If you're curious, you'd notice that the entire editor community on the wiki is voting to delete the entire Roleplaying section on UESP.

By Roleplaying Board, they actually mean a Forum for Roleplaying Oblivion, or any of the other TES Games. Sort of like D&D, and other pen & paper RPGs.

Not unlike the "My Hill/Island" topic. Only you have a Game Master, and people work togeather to accomplish a common goal.

The problem with Online Text Based RPGs, is having to wait for people to reply. You would have to set up a time for eveyone to get togeather, so that there is no lag in responses. This is more difficult due to members being in conflicting Time Zones.

Oh yeah. This came up recently actually, but nothing ever came up. I'd probably be game if enough people were actively involved, but I don't see that happening, mostly due to the reasons Jeff gave.

Make it three! By the by, Cactus, I'd recommend glancing at your Private Messages on the Kelin Ineth board.

By roleplaying board, do you mean something like a board for forum D&D style games? or a board where you have an established character and stick to it?

Hmm. Hard to answer, but I was thinking of something closer to the latter. (For TES world roleplaying, obviously.) Though not a strict character setup either.

I don't see why we can't start up a roleplaying thread in General. If people don't want to see it turn into a "My Island" thread full of godmoding, powerplaying Mary Sues, we could set some strict rules for it. :Twisted Evil:

Phinally! Someone not afraid of strict rulez. (Actually, that'd be wonderful. WoW's roleplaying board somehow organized itself quite well, but most boards don't have such fortune.)

Yeah, I remember Caldyn_Blade made a topic on general about pen&paper RPG's, we discussed the possibility of actually setting up a game, but the difficulty in doing so has already been mentioned.

We certainly don't need a separate board for it though, the only reason that we would is if multiple topics for separate campaigns were created and the stories began colliding or intertwining with eachother in some way (which could be discussed by whoever acts as gamemaster for each separate topic on the board). I'm not sure we have enough members that would be interested in this to justify a new board; but if we get enough people to at least try to start a roleplaying campaign in a topic, I'm game.

And as Deandra so aptly stated... some strict rules would come in handy.

(pssst... Deandra, if we set this up wanna create those rules for us? )

Ok, so would this be freeform RP? How do these basic rules sound:
-- No power play: you control your character, and nobody else's. You cannot kill other characters, or even hurt them, without their permission. You don't decide how other characters react to your actions, either.
-- No godmoding: make your character vulnerable and balanced. See http://users.chariot.net.au/~marcof/tra ... juries.htm
-- Use complete sentences, and make your best effort to use good grammar and spelling
-- If you abandon your character for more than 3 days without prior notice and you're holding up the group, expect your character to be taken over and probably killed
-- Stick to the setting. Do your best to inform yourself of the lore, at least the basics.
-- No Mary Sues. Your character is not royalty. You are not the illegitimate love child of Martin and Queen Morgiah. Your eyes do not flash with different colors when you feel strong emotions.
    -- Use (()) for OOC
-- Style guidelines: Try to make your post longer than just a sentence. Add some detail. Also, it's better to show than to tell when it comes to your characterization--instead of writing "Arlindwe was smart but weak," make her act intelligently in situations, but have her stink at physical combat when it comes up, and let others form their own opinions of her abilities.
-- Breaking the rules: If you can't respect your fellow RPers, your post will be deleted. This will be enforced a bit more aggressively than on the rest of the board.

If someone didn't follow the rules then how could you punish them? Simply ignore them, that might be hard for some people here, including me. Still, I voted against it, we don't need a whole entire forum for that, simply a thread for it. I still see it falling apart.

I don't think there's any need for "punishing." The rules would be posted at the top of the thread(s), and if people ignore them, their posts would be removed. I definitely wouldn't be passing out official warnings or anything, it's just something to keep the RP threads safe from the off-topic posting that goes on in every other thread. (And this off-topic posting is totally fine, in most cases. The RP threads would just be a unique case.)

If most people are willing to work within the rules, but a few people think it's way too strict, those who don't like it would be free to keep blowing up "My Island"

BTW, I was just throwing out some rules to see what people think of it. Let me know which ones you guys think are too strict or excessive.
