We don't want signatures to be too large, we have the limit to keep the forums tidy. 255 characters should be enough.

My own signature at the moment nudges dangerously close the 255 character limit. But that only compelled me to concentrate my malice wit into fewer words.

255 is a magic number for computers. I submit that the reason the character limit is 255 characters is so that the forum software can compress the signature's code into a single image for storage. What you suggest would increase the memory demand extensively, more that you may assume at first blush.
