Howcome they have been happening more often? Ever since the upgrade each has been "has and error" or it can't be displayed, even just today...

Main page of the UESP says it's because of the database server. It also says the fix is temporary.

It's hard to control internal conflicts with the site, when you don't know they are happening, or why; and can rear it's ugly face at any moment. Simply hope it can have a more permanent fix.

i've noticed it has only happened (for me) on the last 3 sundays in a row. this leads me to believe staff are taking actions to avoid outages but are unable to on sundays because they are off work, which may indicate a continuous instability

I think the error message says something about too many connections, so it may have something to do with lots of people looking at the forums/wiki at the same time.

I think it did, or for some reason the site failed to connect to a database.

The database crashed and we lost a good chunk of information, which seems to have come back. I wil let an admin elaborate as I don't want to say anything that isn't true.

In a nutshell: the database server died.

UESP has a cache server that talks to two content servers, both of which talk to the same database server. I'm not going to explain why this makes sense right now - just trust me. The same database powers the forums.

Obviously, with the DB server down we lost all wiki operation. It seems the whole problem has been caused by a hard disk failure, and there will be at least one more outage while that disk is replaced.

This time is more serious than the last couple of weeks in that we may have lost data. Daveh and Nephele have been trying to restore as much as they can, but the site will remain in R/O mode until they can be sure they have as much info back as can be obtained.

The wiki is already back up (in read-only mode) and obviously so are the forums. Please remember that the site is being run by volunteers and things like this are always going to be unavoidable.

Daveh has already said that lessons have been learned from this, and I'm certain that he will be looking at ways to reduce the impact of problems such as this in the future.

I know you all want more than this, but at the moment we have a site owner who is on holiday and a principal admin who has two broken wrists. Things WILL be better soon - please learn patience.

The wiki is up again.

Also, see the wiki news abut the outages.
