Post subject:  PhpBB3 Announcement

Note: Since I am not sure whether I should question this in the Announcemet's Thread, I ask here.

Should all posts in general really be nullified? I propose that instead of just nullifying all posts in General, we instead, lock the General forum, the one we have now, (Whilst beforehand moving a few topics. The spambot thread, music, etc.) and create 2 new forums. One, General Debate, where we debate on General things (since the General forum can offer legit, and worthy debates( With restricted topics of course. )) where posts count, and one General Discussion. Where there will be posts such as "What did you do today" "Memorium" and so on. This posts will not count.

I also ask if a moderator like Codex can be given a small amount of Administrator permissions, things like deleting accounts, adding BBcode, and perhaps changing around permissions.

Also, if it may not be too much trouble, how about we have a General Gaming forum too, for like the Fallout 3 Topic, and Temporarily Elder Scrolls V, and other games, so they do not cloud General Discussion.

Edit: Of course, General Gaming will not count.

Humm, I would like to see it. But for some reason I don't see it happening. :?

The current system is working fine too.

The stated purpose of the forums, as stated at the top of every page is:
Discuss site issues and any Elder Scrolls topics.
So why should posts count when added to a forum devoted to "Talk about yourself, your life and anything else otherwise off-topic here!" ? Besides, post count really doesn't have any significance. The purpose of contributing here is supposed to be to help other players and have fun getting to know other people, not to boost a basically meaningless statistic.

As for administrative powers, I'll have full access to the admin account on the upgraded forums, so it should take less time for admin jobs to be done. If there is an admin-specific task that needs to be done more urgently or on a regular basis, Codex (and the other mods) are welcome to bring it up.

How about making an "Elder Scrolls General" forum for topics that cover TES in erm... general.

Also, perhaps changing the avatar maximum to 120 x 120?

I agree to the changes. I mostly use my time In The general section as do some others. So I see this as a way of promoting more attention to help others in others parts of the forums. I mean the only people complaining are going to be spammers and those who care about post count. So I think post counts are now going to reflect a users true help to the forums.

I 100% agree.

Sorry, but I don't see any particular advantage to doing so. Any image that works at 120x120 can be rescaled to 100x100 without significantly changing the image.

On the other hand, besides the obvious increase in file size and bandwidth, I do see one major problem with doing so: the hundreds of avatars that I just added to the site were all rescaled to be 100x100. I really don't want to redo that work, but yet I also don't think that users who choose to use the site's built-in avatars should be forced to use smaller avatars than other users (if anything, built-in avatars should be larger to encourage their use). So I think there should be some reason justifying any change in avatar size.

As for forum organization and sub-forums, there are going to be some tweaks, but the details are still being discussed. And further adjustments after the upgrade is complete are also possible.

Also, I'd like to make a correction.

I think no one will lose post counts because of PhpBB3's setting for Increment Post Counter in Group Forum Permissions.

See;

Increment post counter

Below that in italics:
Please note that this setting only affects new posts.

So, we're not losing posts.

Actually.. it's been tested, yes you will. Here are some examples of post counts and posts/day (from some days ago).

Kestral : Before- 3770/14.78, After- 1462/5.73
Cactus : Before- 2908/4.46, After- 1129/1.73

Doesn't seem to happen in my [up-to-date] Phpbb3 forum. :/

It will affect everyone retroactively, because I'll be running an SQL query that applies the change retroactively; dig around a bit more on the phpBB3 site and you'll find details about how to do it. As Cactus has pointed out, I've already tested the change and confirmed that it works.

Are you kidding me? I lost about 30 posts under this modification. I was about to hit 100, and now I've been set back at least 25 posts.

Also, all the links that were posted to any forum topic are now broken. Go to the spambot reporting thread and try any one of those links, all gone. URL doesn't exist.

That's because we delete spambot threads...

Well.. that's kind of the point, especially since spamming is against the rules, something we're going to crack down on a lot harder under the new system.

UESP is not about your post count. It's about having fun and helping people.
And your post count now shows how much you've really added to the forum, by answering questions etc. in (for example) the Oblivion forum section.

Uhmm, it was a joke mate. I didn't mean that I did a lot of spamming, but I did post a few irrelevant replies or so. Actually, lemme rephrase that. I didn't do any spamming, merely just said something that may have hinted at off-topic, a mere joke or something... :P

Its just sometimes my suggestions might not be worthy of being called "help" necessarily.... like maybe typing a console command or two for someone who wants to find quick money schemes and the like, but not really any "lskdflaksdfkas pwnzort oisdflkaj;we zkznes" or anything of that nature...

@5tealthh:
You don't have to get defensive. We were just making general statements towards the entire forums, not necessarily directed at you. Mostly stuff we wanted to say anyway, your statement just sort of gave us the excuse. No need to worry.. unless you are a spammer.. *glares*

Post subject:  Re: PhpBB3 Announcement

Spamming is not completely unallowed. If you're getting a bit off-topic or post a reply that isn't very useful, we won't warn you ;)
But if you spam a lot to increase your post count, we might give you a reminder or a warning but only if it really gets out of hand.

And I think there's nothing wrong with your recent posts 5stealthh ;)

There are a lot of people around here who spam much more.

But let's get back on-topic.

Lol, it just seems like the mods are getting onto me on every forum I go to. :P

Not for any real reason, of course...

Anyways, the new polls are pretty neat. They allow you to change your choice in case you screw up. And something really cool about the new polls is that you can edit your polls after you post them. It wouldn't allow me to do that before when I posted the race thread.

so what's with the accounts:
Ask Jeeves [Bot], Google [Bot], Google Adsense [Bot], Yahoo [Bot]

are they meant to be there?

Author:  Josjie [ Wed Jul 01, 2009 9:35 am ]
Post subject:  Re: PhpBB3 Announcement

Yes they are. They have been here before but they were not shown as online "users" on PHPBB2.
If someone searches for "Oblivion problem" there's a good chance that Google will show results from this site.
