i have an idea. wait for it, it's not that crazy :P

yknow how everyone is always trying to be nice to each other all the time. i'm not sure it's in our nature to do that, but we try. then someone says something that really ticks us off and all the fustration we were holding back comes floading out in one go, usually not farely balanced towards the person we're flaming at.

so my point is, why do we let it build up? so here's my idea.

have a Flaming Thread. it'll still get moderated and you still can't break the rules (i.e. no swearing), but mild flaming will be expected. if you want to be flamed at or flame someone else you'd go there and get it off your chest, that way keeping the rest of the forum cleaner.

moderators could respond to flames elsewhere with a, "if you want to do this there's a thread for this" response, or even just move the threads into the flame thread and post a reason why. that way if people still have stuff to get off their chests they won't have to bottle it up and the rest of the forums will seem like a free-er and cleaner place for it.

i'll not be surprised if mods dismiss this out of hand since this is a fam-ill-ee forum but that doesn't mean we can't have an adult debate and discussion about it. feel free to move this to General if you wish :)

I don't think we need this. I think we're civilised enough to take it to PMs if we really want to continue.

I think it encourages flaming so even though I appreciate the fact that you come up with an idea, I don't really like it.

I can only see trouble coming from this idea. In theory it sounds fun and everything, but I think in practice.. probably not so much.

No, simply no.

First, it defeats the purpose with having a rule against flaming.
Secondly, the idea is ridiculous. If you want to flame at people in a forum join Lionhead or Bungie.
Thirdly, the thread will deteriorate the rules. "Hey, we can flame, why not advertise?" "Hey we can advertise, why not double-post?" "Hey, we can double-post, why not post in Spam-Bot threads?" "Hey we post in spam-Bot threads, why post images with ridiculous sizes? Who cares about bandwidth?" and so much more...

Yeah, kestral's right. it would just lead to one thing after another after another after...
Plus, people would just use it to boost their post count.

ok, well i'm both surprised and kinda not surprised at the responses. just about everyone here has been the victim (or perpetrator) of flaming at some point (i mention no names), but i can see how it could lead to further degradation.

still, it seems evident from the recent posts in the general thread that when people try to be nice too much it often results in the blowing up at some point - usually when someone says something that seems really stupid.

EDIT: ps i like your avatar Master Z :)

We now have a whole forum for this ;) All off-topic stuff belongs in General Banter.

No it's for off-topic posts. That's not the same thing as spam posts.

Flaming/spamming is like:

- It's 4 P.M.

- I'm sitting behind my computer.

- Spam

- U-E-S-P yay!

A very bad idea. Once flaming or spamming or anything else that contravenes forum rules is allowed, even in a "dedicated" topic, the tendency is for it to get nasty - well let's face it flaming is just that, getting nasty with other members - and has a habit in spilling over into other parts of the boards. Plus it gives the mods more work to do, the idea of the new layout and rules is to cut down what these guys have to do.

An off topic forum is one thing, allowing the rules to be broken just because a few want it is another. We all know there are plenty of other forums out there in the intranetz where people who have this mindset can go and flame to their hearts content.

Is that a reply to my post?

Since we're not going to allow flaming anywhere on these forums, so perhaps you misunderstood me.

Nope, it was a general reply to the whole topic. If you check the post times I would have had to be real quick to reply at the same time as you posted. ;)

 Ok.

But I'll lock this topic now since this has already been discussed with the other moderators.
