I'd would just like to state that I am in no way criticising the efficiency of the moderators here, because they do a damn good job. This is just a small thing that has puzzled me since I've been here.

I've noticed there are a lot of threads that have not received replies in months or even years (it wouldn't surprise me if every single thread (spam excluded) that has been created since the forums began is still around). Now I know there aren't that many cases of necroposting around here, but wouldn't it be better board management to lock and delete/archive threads that haven't seen the light of day for a long time, and maybe split threads that are seeing a lot of replies? Doing something like this would surely save space and prevent dead topics being bumped by random idiots posting in text speak?

Constantly deleting/locking old threads is a lot of work. And when exactly are threads "too old"? Moreover, it'll be a daily job for moderators to keep an eye on threads that are getting near the "old thread" status (for example: if the last reply was made more than 4 weeks ago).

Deleting them is not even an option (I think). It'll decrease the number of "Total posts" and "Total pages" on the frontpage :D, and old threads might still provide answers or information (the search button comes in place here ;)).

And necro posting doesn't happen that often ;). Spam bots are a bigger problem at the moment :).

As said, going through and locking the thousand of threads that has been dead for severeal weeks/months/years, it's easier to deal with the necroposting on a case by case basis. Deleting the threads is definitely not an option.

i believe deleting threads is bad! bad! bad! you may not have use for them but hundreds of people searching for stuff that's in them will read them via google searches etc. i bet the oldest posts have unusually high ratios of views to replies that demonstrate this.

What!? And crush all my scattered pearls of wit? You'd have to get past my ego first!
