I request for one since the spoilers on this forum are everywhere and always "just scrolling down" never helps.

So I have a provided the HTML code for one and the idea of it.

Code:

Code:
<div style="margin:20px; margin-top:5px"><div class="quotetitle"><input class="button2 btnlite" type="button" value="Show" style="text-align:center;width:100px;margin:0px;padding:0px;" onclick="if (this.parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].getElementsByTagName('div')[0].style.display != '') { this.parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].getElementsByTagName('div')[0].style.display = '';      this.innerText = ''; this.value = 'Hide'; } else { this.parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].getElementsByTagName('div')[0].style.display = 'none'; this.innerText = ''; this.value = 'Show'; }" /></div><div class="quotecontent"><div style="display: none;">{TEXT}</div></div></div>

To use the BBcode:

Code:
[spoiler]{TEXT}[/spoiler]

Note: I made that code myself.

You would place that code in the viewtopic_body.tpl file in the forum's main style's folder, right, Kestral? Just checking for anyone else who may be interested in using your script.

A simple way to avoid spoilers is to write in White and make them highlight it if they want to read it. Too bad some people can be too inconsiderate to even notify they're posting spoilers.

Well, an even easier way would some admin letting us know of the forum background color.

That would let us post in the exact same color, and people could read highlighting it. White is too 'seeable'.

But yes, this code would work out for the best.

I've found the color codes, but the forum uses different colors for odd and even posts.
odd #FBEFD5 odd
even #FAEBD7 even
I could flame the crap out of you right now and you'd never know.
It's pretty easy to find when you look at the forum stylesheet, there's comments everywhere.

You can also just do this:

Warning! Spoilers ahead! I cannot be held responsible for you finding out information you didn't want to know! So be warned! Do not read on if you think this might be a spoiler for you! This is a random message I use every time I'm posting a spoiler so I don't know what the spoiler is about! So if you want to know for certain, read on!

This forum can really use the spoiler tags. It is so easy to install and such a great extra. I wouldn't upgrade these forums to the PHPBB 3 version however, since I do not have any problems with the UESP forums in its current state.

I for one, with all my noobish sway that I hold in these forums (by which I mean that I am absolutely no one of importance here) would deeply love to see a spoiler code added to the site.

May be just me tho.

phpBB3 is amazing forum software. If Daveh ever gets the chance, he should certainly upgrade the forums to phpBB3. Also, phpbb.com, the home website of phpBB, has now pretty much dropped support for phpBB2, so it would be in the best interest of Daveh and the other forum moderators if he upgraded the forum to phpBB3. I'm not saying he has to by any means, but I don't think it is a bad idea at all. Also, I've heard that there are some bugs with phpBB2 forums running on servers with the latest version of PHP5 installed - yet another good reason to upgrade.

Have you ever had problems with the UESP forums? Then why should you upgrade to PHPBB3?

I never have problems with Windows XP. So I won't upgrade my computer to Windows Vista. Simply because it takes time and money.

Sure, these forums can be converted to PHPBB3, but that takes quite some time and what if something goes wrong and all the files & users are gone? And what about the template? Someone has to make a new template especially for PHPBB3.

I personally run my own forum community as well as moderate several others, and I preffer vBulletin, but when it comes to phpBB, I would recommend staying with 2 as opposed to going to 3. Especially if you're already used to 2 and can make it work well!

It may have something to do with the Gama or contrast levels of nyk45's monitor... I personally can see and read it without highlighting, but I wouldn't go so far as to say I could read it easily. However, with a few adjustments of the monitor, I can spot it at a glance, so who's to say?

Well, I cannot read it THAAAAT easily.

I mean, I can't read it as well as well as black font, but it is not hard at all to read.

I can read it with some effort, but little so. And I also admit that if I was warned before there were going to be spoilers, there would be no real chance for me to read it. I don't know. Even if I couldn't read it without highlighting, I would think a spoiler code would be way better.

I would upgrade just because it's better and has more features - plus it's free, so what is there to loose? By the way, if you're worried about loosing users and posts and other data when converting the forum, you can avoid that problem by making backups of the forum files and database tables for your current forum. That way, if anything goes wrong during conversion, you can restore the forums to their previous state with the backup that you made.

Now, about the style, I made a style for my phpBB3 Oblivion forum that looks very nice. I don't know if I'm allowed to link to it, but I wouldn't mind letting others use it, at the moment.

I'm not pressuring anyone to upgrade their forums from phpBB2 to 3; I'm just saying that it is a good idea, and the phpBB Team recommends it highly. phpBB2 might be easier to customize, but once you learn the coding structure and templating system of phpBB3, it will become just as easy to modify as phpBB2. But, those are just my opinions. :)

phpbb2 and 3 are both scripted in PHP.
I haven't gotten my hands on phpbb2 code, but I have a complete vanilla copy of phpbb3 on my computer.
phpbb3 looks pretty sexy in my special programmers notepad. :p

I know. That's why it's called phpBB. :D I just meant that they use a different template system in phpBB2 than in phpBB3.

Its far more than a different template system. The base scripting and database interactions have completely changed. phpBB 3, while boasting nice features like the ability to easily add shoutboxes to profiles and sub-forums to the forum board, sacrificies a lot of stability and user friendliness. phpBB 2, while a bit basic, is a marvel of scripting and can be customized with minimal effort WITHOUT making it unstable or causing it to loose it's connection to the mysql database.

phpBB 2 takes a bit more effort, but it's stability goes un-questioned. But, like all things, the next generation (phpBB 3) will eventually prevail, it just takes some time to get the kinks out.

And as a closing note: Cost has nothing to do with migrating from one phpBB platform to the other, as they're all freeware, available directly from phpBB's website. In addition to this, mirrored downloads are available all over the internet if you're going to try and find a specific version.

Why don't we make a poll?

Do you want the UESP forums to be converted to PHPBB3?

I say no to the conversion. I'm not about to ask the person who started this forum to do tons of extra work just because someone else thinks phpbb3 is better.
And please, someone just PM daveh and ask him if he wants to add the spoiler code, because if we keep talking instead of doing nothing will ever happen.
