Go to the control panel, click profile, then edit avatar. You can insert one from a URL, your computer, or the gallery.

But you have to have been here for a week and have a post count of at least 10 to prove your non-spambotness. Or you can ask for a mod to unlock it for you. So, it actually is due to the fact that you're a newb.

Hmmm, weird. The option seems to be missing...

Fixed. You should now be able to edit both your avatar and signature.
