a few people are complaining openly that they lost a decent sum of posts due to the upgrade (and many more are just keeping it inside). would it be possible to show [posts=x] and then [general posts = x]? i kind of understand what a post count is for, or at least what i always used it for; a value of trust:
(NOT TRYING TO CALL ANYONE OUT! JUST EXAMPLES!)
say, if i needed a problem solved, and two people had different ideas on how to solve it, i would trust weka's (~3000 posts) opinion before i would trust scribbane's (~300). but they are still kind of a fun thing to have, all those lost posts...
just throwing that out there

Post count is really superficial though, technically it really isn't necessary other than what some would use them for, as bragging rights. While it can show a persons activity, post counts are just a treat, not real meat to info.
And I'm not liking the example you used, it reinforces what I'm saying. Why should a higher post count make a person's opinion any more or less valid? A higher post count doesn't always mean they know what they are talking about, I have 5k post counts on some sites, but it doesn't mean I'll always have the most trustworthy response to an issue.
I can see what you are saying though in general, but I think it was made to reflect only a couple areas, cause some topics in General could be considered spam posts, not the real meat to a person.
This is all my opinion though, I am sure some will disagree with this though.

well, anyone with a higher post count would have the game (at least one of the series) since they joined (i would think), where as many people would get the game, and immediately want to know about it, IE join the forums. not necessarily true in all cases, or in most for that matter, but who would you believe in that situation?

Which is precisely why they don't count in General. I'd be worried if someone saw my old 3000+ post count and thought "Hmm... they must know a lot about TES!" and give more weight to my opinions than, say, Rohugh, when actually only 1200 posts were made there.

I have NO idea. Probably, but I don't see why, other than to stroke my ego.

If I saw someone with a post count of 10, and one of 1000, I'd believe whoever seemed more reliable by what they post, not how high their post count is. I first joined forums around 2006 on, Bungie good site, bad member reputation. There were never post counts when I joined, I learned to trust people that seemed to know what they talked about, I know their were members who spammed for the amount of pages they had, cause they were the ones usually getting banned. I don't trust post count, I trust the person.
And I do think it's possible, maybe not with PhpBB but I don't know how flexible Php is. But in general, yes I think it can be made a reality.

Not easily, no. Unless you can find a phpBB mod somewhere that has already taken care of all the code and database changes that would be necessary to implement it.

Post count can't be relied upon for trust and knowledge, there are many people with a high post count because they just spam the oblivion forum and they don't even know much of the game, one would be you at the moment-you're flood posting in Oblivion so for you to bring up that post count should give higher reliablility and authority then you are just admitting why you're post flooding.

im not really worried about mine, i have less than 30 posts in the general section. i just figured it would stop people from complaining so much. and i really wouldnt consider it post flooding, i call it not having much else to do. i play oblivion alot because i only ave a handful of games, no license, a house in the middle of nowhere, and a relatively small yard. and for the most part, all of my posts are contributing to the related cause, any that arent are probably me joking with other members here. as a matter of fact, i generally only post topics i find interesting or ones that would be considered a good question. most other little things I pm people and ask there.

You can count all your general posts and put them in your location.
Like:
Location: I've got 991 General posts!!

Speaking of post counts, Dogmantra, did you lock your post count at 1337?

No, he just refuses to post out of General so it can stay at 1337.
