 Post subject: Running Oblivion on dual cores or higher.

--So I'm getting Oblivion on PC with the new collection, but I've heard it was built for only one core. I can run it with only one core of course, but I was wondering if there were any tweaks or modifications that could make Oblivion run even better on a multi-core system.

As far as I know, the amount of cores used is built into the game's engine. However, it seems to run fine on my outdated AMD Athlon II quad core, only 2.9 GHz per core. Guessing you have a better CPU than me, it should run fine for you.

Edit: Derp, didn't notice that this is in the MOD section. I guess I will just leave this post in case it helps.

A few pointers:

Oblivion doesn't use OpenMP very well to keep the multiprocessing platform independent.

I use
iNumHavokThreads=5

[OpenMP]:
iThreads=16
iOpenMPLevel=32



Also try in Oblivion.ini these two in the General section.

bUseThreadedAI=1
iNumHWThreads=2

They are from Fallout, and the consensus is they don't improve performance, but stability IF your game is unstable. If your game is stable, the consensus from other forums is they probably won't make any difference.

See the Tweakguides discussion on threading,

Use a program like Oblivion Stutter Removal, and tweak its ini settings. Interesting options on heap algorithm & threading available.

I occasionally use a program called Process Lasso. There's very good instruction at http://preventcrashesinoblivion.page.tl/Change-core-affinity-and-priority.htm

Again, this is for stability, but as the system uses the first two cores, you can dedicate the remaining two to Oblivion. and along with Priority & I/O Priority, you might get slightly better performance.
